Common synonyms: Carinena, Carignano, Mazuelo

Parentage of the grape: indigenous to Aragon, Spain
History of the grape: The grape has been traced as far back as the 3rd century in the Aragon province in Spain. The Aragon region of Carinena was originally named for the once-prolific regional grape, though Garnacha (or Grenache) has since gained precedence. As Mazuelo, it is one of the main blending grapes of Rioja and as Carinena in Priorat blends. From Spain it made its way to Algeria and was introduced into the Languedoc region of France some time in the 12th century. It's also mainly a blending grape there, most often with Cinsault, Syrah, Grenache, Mourvedre, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. In the 20th century, it found its way to places like Chile, the US and Israel, where growing conditions allow for more single varietal releases with concentrated flavors.

Dense, semi opaque purple coloration with brown hues around the rim. Meaty aromas primarily, tons of dark berry, booze, hints of raw coffee bean and herbal/grassy notes. Flavors that are fleshy, medicinal Earthy/herbal notes, tea leaf astringency, and a medium body. Smooth finish and on the palate, the alcohol is well hidden and after the swa... Read More

As Garnacha has proven itself to be well suited to the climate of the region, it has largely replaced the original plantings in Cariñena. Still, the Cariñena grape is used in many blends and variet... Read More

I hear Halcon Alturas is a ways away from ripening, but the harvest of whites has been in full effect. When should the Cabernet, and other reds be "ready"?Let's pick now (or soon) I say!Floods and fros... Read More
