Common synonyms: Carinena, Carignano, Mazuelo

Parentage of the grape: indigenous to Aragon, Spain
History of the grape: The grape has been traced as far back as the 3rd century in the Aragon province in Spain. The Aragon region of Carinena was originally named for the once-prolific regional grape, though Garnacha (or Grenache) has since gained precedence. As Mazuelo, it is one of the main blending grapes of Rioja and as Carinena in Priorat blends. From Spain it made its way to Algeria and was introduced into the Languedoc region of France some time in the 12th century. It's also mainly a blending grape there, most often with Cinsault, Syrah, Grenache, Mourvedre, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. In the 20th century, it found its way to places like Chile, the US and Israel, where growing conditions allow for more single varietal releases with concentrated flavors.
Characteristics of the grape: deep, dark, rich, strong tannins, mineral, blueberry, blackberry, boysenberry Read more »

Carignan on Snooth

  • OK, some proposals:1) asparagus: just about the only wine that reliably works ... can survive the encounter. Carignan, strangely enough, almost does...8) nam pla: fuggedaboudit. Unless you're born in SE Asia the sauce itself is an acquired taste, and has to be woven skillfully into dishes for its beauty to appear. Too much and you think you've... Read More

  • M. Chapoutier Grenache Blend Côtes du Roussillon Villages Latour Domaine de Bila-Haut Vignes Bila 2010

This is a very nice Rhone blend of syrah, grenache and carignan. Very well balanced with the blackberry and dark red cherry from the syrah coming to the forefront. This has soft, fine tannins, decent acidity, a touch of earthiness and a medium length finish. Excellent QPR! Read More

  • Château Beauchene Cotes du Rhone Grande Reserve 2012

A hint of leathery funk greets the nose followed by lovely layered aromas of dried mushroom, baking spice, candied violet, strawberry, juniper and beef blood. A little weighty and plush in the mouth, this feels just a bit clumsy while it delivers light if fresh flavors of red fruits, raspberry and strawberry with hints of rhubarb and almost a be... • Orpheon Musique des Cepages Domaine Tenon NV

I bought this bottle of wine for £5 from the Domaine Tenon stand at the 2014 ... a blend of syrah, grenache, carignan and mourverde but I do not know in what proportions.I started my bottle last night with my supper of a pork chop and I did enjoy it.There is plenty of a blackcurrant and cherry style fruit there and there is a distinct spicy finis Read More

  • Yeah guys, every day is a learning experience.  I happen to think that is ... blend of 60% Zinfandel, 24% Carignan, 8% Petite Sirah and 8% Alicante Bouchet. • Enkidu E Old Vine Field Blend 2012

Very pleasant nose announcing a brambly type of zin. Sure enough, nice blackberry on the tip of the tongue followed by sharp tartness as from a plum. Very obvious, but not overwhelming drying tannins. A pleasant finish that fades in a very nice diminuendo. Read More
