Common synonyms: Carinena, Carignano, Mazuelo

Parentage of the grape: indigenous to Aragon, Spain
History of the grape: The grape has been traced as far back as the 3rd century in the Aragon province in Spain. The Aragon region of Carinena was originally named for the once-prolific regional grape, though Garnacha (or Grenache) has since gained precedence. As Mazuelo, it is one of the main blending grapes of Rioja and as Carinena in Priorat blends. From Spain it made its way to Algeria and was introduced into the Languedoc region of France some time in the 12th century. It's also mainly a blending grape there, most often with Cinsault, Syrah, Grenache, Mourvedre, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. In the 20th century, it found its way to places like Chile, the US and Israel, where growing conditions allow for more single varietal releases with concentrated flavors.

  • Old School Rose 2013

Biodynamic Earthy and dry on the nose with floral aromas and a nice beeswax notes along with a hint of white pepper. Supple on entry with nicely integrated acids. the flavor profile leans a little towards the spicy end of the spectrum as well with strawberry fruit framed with accents of black raspberry fruit and a bit of inky spice. easy drink... • Clos des Fous Cauquenina Organic 2011

Funk on the nose. A northern Rhone wine reborn in Chile at a value price. This wine is proof that price does not always indicate quality! This would be a $75 wine if from the Napa Valley. Read More

  • Chateau Saint Jacques d'Albas Minervois 2004

I bought this bottle of wine as part of a lot on ... a third Grenache and a third carignan and spends 12 months in oak barrels.I started the bottle last night with my roast chicken and I did enjoy it. There is some lovely blackcurrant, plum and cherry style fruit there, the tannins give good structure, and there is a hint of spice. Overall, I w... Read More

  • La Borie Carignan Pays de l'Aude 2011

Got two from BevMo 5c sale for 14.95....a wine from nowhere of unexisting winery.Anyway, generally it's not bad for 7,5$ but not two bottles. The taste remineds me Eguia Rioja '07 from Costco, but it's not that bad! It's more balanced I'de say. Nose: boring, aged metallic, like Eguia.Taste: Round, a bit waterish at the beginning, more tannic at ... Read More

  • As we spend time this summer exploring new wine regions it’s worth ... ... ... year (sense a trend?) is Carignan. The red wines of the Languedoc are, in many ways, similar to the wines of the Southern Rhone, though the inclusion, and in fact emphasis on Carignan does set them apart. They tend to share some of the plump textures we are familiar... Read More

  • Domaine Bordes Saint-Chinian 2012

Syrah Grenache CarignanGamy on the nose with iodine streaked aromas of blue plums, macerated flowers and raw beef, though this gains hints of smoke and raspberry fruit as it sits in the glass as well as some fascinating wild herb notes. A touch soft on entry, this is a slightly rustic wine with soft plump fruit paired with tannins that are a b... Read More

  • Chemin des Olivettes Coteaux du Languedoc 2012

35% Carignan, 30% Grenache, 20% Syrah, 15% MourvedreOpening with a gorgeous set of aromas, all violet, lavender, fennel seed and cardamom laden over a base of spicy red cherry and cranberry fruit, this shows a bit of a lighter profile in the mouth than might be expected. Soft tannins and well integrated acids keep the palate of blueberry and plu... Read More

  • Domaine des 2 Anes Fontanilles Corbieres 2011

60% Carignan & a blend of Syrah & Grenache Noir.A touch of funk greets the nose but as that blows off its replaced by a lovely blend of violet pastille, grilled beef, ginseng, and spicy blue fruits. Bright and soft, this is more driven by the acid, which is well integrated, rather than the somewhat soft tannins. it almost fills the mouth with fi... Read More
