Carignan

Common synonyms: Carinena, Carignano, Mazuelo

Parentage of the grape: indigenous to Aragon, Spain

History of the grape: The grape has been traced as far back as the 3rd century in the Aragon province in Spain. The Aragon region of Carinena was originally named for the once-prolific regional grape, though Garnacha (or Grenache) has since gained precedence. As Mazuelo, it is one of the main blending grapes of Rioja and as Carinena in Priorat blends. From Spain it made its way to Algeria and was introduced into the Languedoc region of France some time in the 12th century. It's also mainly a blending grape there, most often with Cinsault, Syrah, Grenache, Mourvedre, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. In the 20th century, it found its way to places like Chile, the US and Israel, where growing conditions allow for more single varietal releases with concentrated flavors.

Carignan on Snooth

  • Rocca Rubia Riserva 2012

    Snoothrank:

Very dull almost prune color in the glass. Slight chemical note on the nose. Very little fruit on introductionmaybe the slightest suggestion of raisin but without any sugar. Lots of earthiness. Some mushroomy fungal things. No tannin to speak of and, similarly, very little acidity. An OK wine, but lack of acid makes it a bit boring. Read More

  • Ridge Lytton Springs 2012

    Snoothrank:

PnPed. Musty nose. May blow off in a few minutes. Red fruit on entrysome raspberry, but, as much as anything, thing not very tart cranberry, if such a thing exists. Firm but not obtrusive tannin. I would give a similar description for acid. Far from the most full-bodied Zin. Sure enough. The mustiness on the nose on opening was probably... Read More

  • Ridge Geyserville 2010

    Snoothrank:

Dark plum color. Very much an earthy nose. Light hit of candied fruit on entry. Then some sour hits. Then some bitterness. That makes for a very unusual experience. Surprising to me, but not altogether off-putting. Also interesting that this is, probably, the lightest bodied Ridge Ive ever had. A good wine, but far from my favorite from... Read More
