Carignan

Common synonyms: Carinena, Carignano, Mazuelo

Parentage of the grape: indigenous to Aragon, Spain

History of the grape: The grape has been traced as far back as the 3rd century in the Aragon province in Spain. The Aragon region of Carinena was originally named for the once-prolific regional grape, though Garnacha (or Grenache) has since gained precedence. As Mazuelo, it is one of the main blending grapes of Rioja and as Carinena in Priorat blends. From Spain it made its way to Algeria and was introduced into the Languedoc region of France some time in the 12th century. It's also mainly a blending grape there, most often with Cinsault, Syrah, Grenache, Mourvedre, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. In the 20th century, it found its way to places like Chile, the US and Israel, where growing conditions allow for more single varietal releases with concentrated flavors.

Carignan on Snooth

  • Corsica may fall under French jurisdiction, but its spirit is clearly distinct ... ... in addition to Syrah, Carignan and other southern French varieties, too. Fifty-five percent of the production in Corsica is rosé; fourteen percent is white; and a small dribble, one percent, is sweet, vindoux-style Muscat. Thirty percent of production is re... Read More

  • Vintjs Mendocino County Carignane 2013

    Snoothrank:

Fruity and a bit earthy on the nose. Likewise the palate is fruity and a bit earthy with little acidity and almost no tannins or finish. Read More

  • How many female winemakers and vineyard owners do you know? A few months ago, ... cooler season. Crafted from Carignan, Syrah and Grenache Noir, with half the blend barrel-aged for 15 months, this structured yet supple wine has wonderful notes of dark, cooked fruit, cocoa and spice. Its length, character and pronounced aromatic profile make it... Read More

  • Bedrock Wine Company the Bedrock Heritage 2013

    Snoothrank:

Murky marroon color in the glass. Nose of blackberry and plummake that prune. Fairly jammy on the tip of the tongue. This declines closer to neutral on subsequent tastesmay be a result of air, or maybe not. Serious tannin also neutralizes fruit. Some stoniness in the back of the palate. Read More

  • Sandlands Carignane Mendocino County 2013

    Snoothrank:

Pretty red color. Muted, dusty nose. Hit of raspberry or cherry on the tip of ... much as Im used to seeing in Carignanes. This is followed by serious acid tartness. Drying tannins are apparent, but they are different from tannins that I get from Cabernet Sauvignon or Zinfandel. Not terribly heavy. This could almost be a summer sipper. I... Read More

  • "When the moon hits your eye/like a big pizza pie/that's ... it could ... it could use an admixture of carignan and petite sirah as they do in DCV, but that seems less common up here. I love Zin, but it's a flawed grape in some ways, with large berries and a tendency to go pale and lack tannin.  Tasty, clearly Zin, the Easton was the best of t... Read More

  • Ortas le Grand Jas Côtes du Rhône 2013

    Snoothrank:

Rather dark for a CdR with lots of dark fruit on the nose. Sweet dark fruit on entry with little acid and soft tannins. Long finish with a nice bit of redeming licorice. Read More
