Carignan

Common synonyms: Carinena, Carignano, Mazuelo

Parentage of the grape: indigenous to Aragon, Spain

History of the grape: The grape has been traced as far back as the 3rd century in the Aragon province in Spain. The Aragon region of Carinena was originally named for the once-prolific regional grape, though Garnacha (or Grenache) has since gained precedence. As Mazuelo, it is one of the main blending grapes of Rioja and as Carinena in Priorat blends. From Spain it made its way to Algeria and was introduced into the Languedoc region of France some time in the 12th century. It's also mainly a blending grape there, most often with Cinsault, Syrah, Grenache, Mourvedre, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. In the 20th century, it found its way to places like Chile, the US and Israel, where growing conditions allow for more single varietal releases with concentrated flavors.

Characteristics of the grape: deep, dark, rich, strong tannins, mineral, blueberry, blackberry, boysenberry Read more »

  • Domaine Chante Cigal Cotes du Rhone Vielles Vignes 2014

    Snoothrank:

Medium weight with rich ripe fruit and low acidity. The added Carignan give this wine an added tannic bite and lets it stand out from the others. Read More

  • Stephen, any comments on the Aussie wines and their prices towards the top of ... Vi de Vila. The Garnatxa and Carignan for this cuvée come from lower, flatter, and cooler vineyards than the precipitously steep, sun-baked, slate slopes that make Priorat famous (and famously difficult to farm, hence expensive). Fermented whole-cluster and aged ... Read More

  • Antano Rioja Reserva 2009

    Snoothrank:

Quite darkpretty much, opaquein the glass. Modest barnyard nose. On the tongue I am surprised at the lack of fruitthere is some dark berry fruit there, but it is very light and pretty sour. Lots of dustiness which gives a puckery sensation. What do you expect for Read More

  • Here is a wine from Texas of all places, the 2015 EVS Cellars Windblown. ... ... ... being a red blend of Carignan, Mourvedre, Petite Syrah, Syrah and Grenache.  My wife Sandra had a few sips and said it was flat.  She gave me the rest of the wine in her glass.  I would not pour it out though.  I will finish the bottle and be stronger for it.... • The reason I should never read labels before tasting a wine is because I become ... example, I see a blend of Carignan, Petite Sirah and some other stuff. My prejudice has already kicked in.  There is no reason to read more than Carignan and PS.  I want it.But when I read "Texas," all the positive vibe I had is just flushed away.Keep up the goo... • Great responses from you guys.  I too love the Spanish wines and find ... ... 45% Syrah (20 year old), 10% Carignan (40 year old).  I would say it's slightly more tannic than the Bordeaux wine and has a bit less fruit on the first taste, but it's more consistent over the life of the bottle being drunk (two days Read More

  • Sometimes we get used to paying upwards of $100 for a nice bottle of wine from the wine shop.  Those are the 'good days' that we want to remember, but soon you notice your bank account is dropping faster than Trumps approval rating, so you start looking for more value-oriented wines that are tasty in their own right. When you find a nice wine tha... • Rocca Rubia Riserva 2012

    Snoothrank:

Very dull almost prune color in the glass. Slight chemical note on the nose. Very little fruit on introductionmaybe the slightest suggestion of raisin but without any sugar. Lots of earthiness. Some mushroomy fungal things. No tannin to speak of and, similarly, very little acidity. An OK wine, but lack of acid makes it a bit boring. Read More
