Carignan

Common synonyms: Carinena, Carignano, Mazuelo

Parentage of the grape: indigenous to Aragon, Spain

History of the grape: The grape has been traced as far back as the 3rd century in the Aragon province in Spain. The Aragon region of Carinena was originally named for the once-prolific regional grape, though Garnacha (or Grenache) has since gained precedence. As Mazuelo, it is one of the main blending grapes of Rioja and as Carinena in Priorat blends. From Spain it made its way to Algeria and was introduced into the Languedoc region of France some time in the 12th century. It's also mainly a blending grape there, most often with Cinsault, Syrah, Grenache, Mourvedre, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. In the 20th century, it found its way to places like Chile, the US and Israel, where growing conditions allow for more single varietal releases with concentrated flavors.

Carignan on Snooth

  • Ridge Lytton Springs Dry Creek Valley 2015

    Snoothrank:

Some dustiness in the nose. Red fruit on entry, but, thankfully, not jammy or syrupynice acid tartness seems to deflect those possibilities. A bit light on tannin compared to my memory of previous vintages. An easy to drink wine, but I think more sideways storage will integrate the components, better. Read More

  • I've packed up and moved south for a while. Currently in Orange Beach ... ... ... 2015A blend of Grenache, Carignan and just a touch of Cab from the Priorat region of Spain. 15% ABU Dark ruby with the slightest tinge of purple in color. The nose is classic grenache. Taste is sour cherry with medium acidity that finishes with a strong kalmata o... Read More

  • Seghesio San Lorenzo Estate 2012

    Snoothrank:

Vibrant purple color in the glassmore blue than you normally see. Candied fruit on entry. That seems a bit disappointing. Tannin and acid are, very much, resolved. So, now that Im over the initial fruity blast, Im all over the smoothness. An enjoyable wine, but I think Im going to drink mine up. I see no reason to keep these in the cellar. Read More

  • Mont Gravet Carignan 2016

    Snoothrank:

Lightly floral sour cherry, smoky earth and savory red currant and cranberry notes on the nose. Chubby and fruit forward on the palate, quite round but flabby with cherry and cranberry fruit, good tannic structure on the mid palate and a spike of red fruit and perfumed violets towards the finish. • Marietta Cellars Angeli Cuvee 2013

    Snoothrank:

Easy wine to drink--just not terribly sophisticated. Candied red fruit on entry. Then some tarry notes. Not particularly tannic or full-bodied. The saving grace is that there is sufficient tartness to keep this from being declared a fruit bomb. Read More

I loved their Old Vines Wild Carignan.  Another producer, whose wines are unfortunately not on the US scene YET, but whom I am completely impressed with, is Ya'acov Oryah, a winemaker who makes his living by working for larger wineries, but has his own wine that ... • Chateau Carignan Prima 2014

    Snoothrank:

We do not get Chateau Carignan up this way often, but we should: the 100% Merlot Prima has Fronsac-like subdued rusticity with a deep, fresh cherry bouquet and male-merlot depth, power and finish on the palate. Judicious use of oak adds spice and age-worthiness. Slightly bitter on the back-end, but this comes with youth. 89. Read More
