Parentage of the grape: it’s a chicken or egg scenario. Cab Franc has been determined as one of the parents of Cabernet Sauvignon (the other is Sauvignon Blanc).
History of the grape: References to it in the Loire region of France date as far back as the mid 12th century. But its historic moment came In the 17th century when Cardinal Richelieu selected it for the garden of Abbaye de St. Nicolas de Bourgeuil, where it was attended by an abbot named Breton (hence the local synonym). Plantings spread into Bordeaux in the 18th century, where it met its life partner Sauvignon Blanc, and Cabernet Sauvignon came into existence. It is now mostly used as a blending grape there. However in the Loire and Southwest France, it is still vinified as a varietal wine in the likes of Bourgeuil, Chinon, Tauraine, Saumur, Anjou and the few reds of Read more »

Cabernet Franc on Snooth

  • Pride Mountain Vineyards Napa Valley Cabernet Franc 2004

It's not easy to find a high quality cab franc. When I do, I hang on. This qualifies as a VERY good one (though maybe not great). Pride Mountain has a reputation for huge, earthy reds, and this one doesn't disappoint. The fruit and tannins balance nicely and the finish is the full, long one that's characteristic of so many of their efforts. Read More

  • Pride Mountain Vineyards Cabernet Franc Sonoma County 2002

I was lucky enough to start with a barrel-tasting of this wine on a visit to the winery. It blew me away then and continues to do so now. WS wasn't too optimistic about its longevity when they rated it in 2005, but I think it is drinking as well now as it was then and it seems that it will for at least the next 3-5 years. Read More

  • Carmelo Patti Red Blend Gran Assemblage 2002

Even decanted and with asado steak I watched being cooked in Mendoza, this one gets docked because I compared it to the 2003. Carmelo Patti definitely shows his love with this remarkably complex blend. Markedly complex and gratifying, it remains quite unlike any other similar blends that I've enjoyed. Have with game or otherwise [char]grilled re... Read More

  • Hosmer Cabernet Franc Cayuga Lake 2006

Cabernet Franc has traditionally been blended with other red Bordeaux varieties, including its relative Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2006 Cabernet Franc is a prime example of the fruity nature of all the 2006 vinifera reds. A sweet plummy core of weight wrapped with raspberry and bramble berries around a smooth yet gripping finish and supple tannins. Read More

  • Donati Family Vineyard Red Bordeaux Blend Paicines Claret 2005

The winemaker's notes are right on target. It contains everything but the ... ... ... Sauvignon, 14% Syrah, 4% Cabernet Franc, 3% Malbec, and 2% Petite Verdot. There's something in this wine for everybody to like. What's interesting is that the DNA of each of the varietals can be easily detected. There are blue and purple fruit notes from ... Read More

  • Mondavi Oakville Cabernet 2006

This was one of the smoothest Cab's I have ever had. Great bold taste without the overpowering aftertaste. I will be buying this one again and adding it to my collection. Read More
