Name of varietal: Cabernet Franc

Common synonyms: breton, bouchy, bidure, bouchet, cabernet franco, capbreton rouge, kaberne frank, noir dur
Parentage of the grape: it’s a chicken or egg scenario. Cab Franc has been determined as one of the parents of Cabernet Sauvignon (the other is Sauvignon Blanc).
History of the grape: References to it in the Loire region of France date as far back as the mid 12th century. But its historic moment came In the 17th century when Cardinal Richelieu selected it for the garden of Abbaye de St. Nicolas de Bourgeuil, where it was attended by an abbot named Breton (hence the local synonym). Plantings spread into Bordeaux in the 18th century, where it met its life partner Sauvignon Blanc, and Cabernet Sauvignon came into existence. It is now mostly used as a blending grape there. However in the Loire and Southwest France, it is still vinified as a varietal wine in the likes of Bourgeuil, Chinon, Tauraine, Saumur, Anjou and the few reds of Read more »

Cabernet Franc on Snooth

  • Château les Ormes de Pez Red Bordeaux Blend St. Estèphe 2008

Süsser schwarzer Frucht may well describe the nose, but I would say that sweet red fruit is equally present. The entry is very St. Estèphe, however, with medicinal herb, earth and cranberry (acid). This wine is typical for the region in my experience with residual tannin to age a bit further. Great with food. 89 points. Read More

  • Jon - Kékfrankos is the name for BF in Hungarian! "Kék" ... ... Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc, which Hungary can do quite well, and Merlot, Kékfrankos, Zweigelt, Kékoportó, Pinot Noir, and Syrah. • Keenan Cabernet Franc Spring Mountain Estate 2008

Very much a musty/viney nose. On the tongue you know this one is a brute. What black fruit may be detected by the tip of the tongue is there is swept away by earthiness and tobacco or dark chocolate flavors as the wine passes farther along the tongue and palate. Pair this one with your biggest beef roast meals. Read More

  • Spring Valley Vineyard Uriah 2008

Pretty interesting wine. Quite different from the California style for a Bordeaux blend. (Well, duh.) That might be from the lack of Cabernet Sauvignon. First of all, it is a very attractive bluish-purple in the glass. Big, fruity nose of blackberry and (I know there is no CS.) currant. On the tongue I get that initial blast of black fruit,... Favorite from the 'Flight No.7: 'California Dreaming' had at CRU in Love Field. From the CRU Tasting Notes: 'Complex nose displaying layers of ripe cassis, dark plum, toasted vanilla spice, bay leaf, floral notes and subtle earthy aromas...The persistent, yet elegant finish is polished and round...' All three were interesting, though this one ha... Read More
