History of the grape: References to it in the Loire region of France date as far back as the mid 12th century. But its historic moment came In the 17th century when Cardinal Richelieu selected it for the garden of Abbaye de St. Nicolas de Bourgeuil, where it was attended by an abbot named Breton (hence the local synonym). Plantings spread into Bordeaux in the 18th century, where it met its life partner Sauvignon Blanc, and Cabernet Sauvignon came into existence. It is now mostly used as a blending grape there. Cabernet Franc on Snooth

  • I'll start this one off with a comparison of two Cabernet Franc wines, both from Virginia USA.  The year is 2015, and the wineries are in Southern Virginia and Northern Virginia.  The Keswick Vineyards 2015 Cabernet Franc was a bit tart and tannic.  Not my favorite by any means.  We bought it because we did a tasting there last year and you need... • Time for some horizontal tasting.  This topic is specifically to address commonalities and differences between the same grape varietal (or blend) and same year of bottling, but at different wineries or different vineyards of the same winery.  Take a picture of your two or more bottle comparisons and tell us which is better.  If you can, provide ... • Lieb Cellars Cabernet Franc Reserve North Fork of Long Island 2015

    Snoothrank:

Light cherry and raspberry fruit aromas with a candied sugar quality and a hint of wildflower. Nicely fruited and pleasantly herbed on the palate, with dark raspberry and crispy cranberry fruit flavors, good fresh acidity and a palate that's light on its feet, a touch of blueberry and warming tannins on the finish. • Chateau Montlabert 2011

    Snoothrank:

Montlabert is a relative bargain for Saint-Emilion, but exhibits all the usual traits of wine from this commune, to wit: a veritable surfeit of cherry on the nose (sprinkled with oak), followed by considerable residual oak and good red fruit (cherry) on the palate with a hint of wet loam; finish has pucker (tannin). Although oak is still promin... Read More

  • Dancing Hares Mad Hatter Napa Valley 2014

    Snoothrank:

Perfumed violets and milk chocolate aromas with creamy vanilla and blackberry notes and a hint of something savory underneath. Surprisingly delicate on entry but releasing a forceful wave of blackberry and black currant fruit, full acidity, blueberry, dried figs and striped tannins towards the finish with melted lava cake and espresso adding som... • Osoyoos Larose le Grand Vin 2009

    Snoothrank:

The Osoyoos Larose just keeps improving, and the 2009 edition is as good as any of the predecessors with a cedar bark - sweet cherry nose with a hint of black earth and pencil lead. Unbelievable mouth-filling flavours of cherry, cake spice and bramble berries with a hint of vanilla on the finish. As a Bordeaux should be, but often isn't. Sup... Read More

  • Concha Y Toro Serie Riberas Gran Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon Marchigue 2014

    Snoothrank:

Pungent and richly fruited aromas of blackberry and earthy/savory notes of olive and dark plum. This is elegant and assertive on the palate with excellent balance and finesse, showing dark fruit flavors of blackberry and black currant, pleasant spice and a creamy chocolate and dark espresso finish.91 pts Read More
