Bual

Bual (or Boal) is a grape variety used in Madeira production. It is the second sweetest of the four noble Madeira grapes: Sercial, Verdelho, Bual and Malmsey. It makes medium-rich fortified wines. – Description from Rodolphe Boulanger

  • Cossart Gordon & Co. Bual Madeira 5 Years Old Medium Rich NV

    Snoothrank:

Well, it's a fortified wine, so it's thick and syrupy. I was excited to try Madeira, but it's just too thick and viscous and cloying for me. Reminds me of a liquid sticky toffee pudding. Enticing in theory, not so much in practice. Though, my Madeira-obsessed table mate praised it highly, so I think Madeira lovers might enjoy. Read More

  • Okay, we usually don't make brisket for Rosh Hashanah, but this year the wife saw a recipe that she liked with plums and port.  So what to go with it?  Earlier, we had planned a pre-Inquisition Spanish-Jewish meal, and I was all hyped up for Spanish wine, but now I'm kind of dubious about tempranillo with this. So, Rhones?  Something higher in a... Read More

    Snoothrank:

tasting now. feels lighter, more burnt than a blandy's 15yo Bual. closer to what I would expect in a 5yo Sercal. more depth in some respects, but, again, the feeling of blending games designed - alas - to bring a few extra levels to an undeveloped (immature?) back-room no-label product that makes up the majority of the bottle.absence of expected...
