Blaufränkisch

Blaufränkisch is the most important Austrian red variety to many Austrian vintners despite the fact it is not the most largely planted. Although it's exact origins are not 100% determined, it is believe to be of Austrian decent. The grape's name breaks down to mean, "good, fine" grape. Blaufränkisch thrives deep soils, but also does well in lime soils. The best expressions of the grape come from Central Burgenland and South Burgenland, both sides of Lake Neusiedl and Carnumtum (in lower Austria.) The grapes is generally harvested late and is prone to botrytis-related grape stem rot. Tasting notes: Aroma: dark berry, boysenberry and mineral notes Palate: Appetizing acidity and firm tannin structure. Typical wine making technique: Needs at least two years of aging before it becomes approachable. The best vintages have incredible and aging potential fermented in new French oak barrels. Blaufränkisch is often blended with small amount of Cabernet Sauvignon and/or Merlot.

Full of big, juicy, dark berry-fruits... right up there with my favorite Portuguese Touriga Francas, the closest wine I've had to this delicious bottle. Read More

Delicious, mild red table wine. The real character comes with its slightly smoky finish and autumnal taste in you mouth. At $10 a bottle, this is a fantastic New York rd wine. Read More

  • Monarchia Noir 2003

    Snoothrank:

The bright fruity nose is the last part of this wine that I've encountered before in others. What an odd experience. Cough syrup and leather with a bitter finish. Sticks around for a while, too. Wow. Read More

  • Monarchia Noir 2003

    Snoothrank:

Meaty, fruity anjd slightly hot nose. Quite a powerful wine (especially after i was led to believe that it would taste like Pinot Noir with attitude). Very fruity, almost sweet with its thick treacle-esque texture. A slightly bitter finish, but not altogether unpleasant. Read More

  • A while back The New York Times Wine Critic Eric Asimov wrote about blaufrankisch, an Austrian/German grape varietal that produces an earthy red wine that I personally love. Asimov noted that the wine may not have gained the popularity it deserves in the US because people are unable to pronounce its name. "Think of how many potentially pleasurab... Read More

  • Zantho Blaufränkisch Qualitätswein Trocken Burgenland 2005

    Snoothrank:

I think this is a fun wine to test/train a beginning palate because the different flavors are so distinct and offer an immediate reward. Saying a wine is floral is one thing, but sticking your nose in a rose is another. For me, this wine hit me hard with rose and black licorice. Still looking for food pairing ideas, suggestions?
