Blaufränkisch

Blaufränkisch is the most important Austrian red variety to many Austrian vintners despite the fact it is not the most largely planted. Although it's exact origins are not 100% determined, it is believe to be of Austrian decent. The grape's name breaks down to mean, "good, fine" grape. Blaufränkisch thrives deep soils, but also does well in lime soils. The best expressions of the grape come from Central Burgenland and South Burgenland, both sides of Lake Neusiedl and Carnumtum (in lower Austria.) The grapes is generally harvested late and is prone to botrytis-related grape stem rot. Tasting notes: Aroma: dark berry, boysenberry and mineral notes Palate: Appetizing acidity and firm tannin structure. Typical wine making technique: Needs at least two years of aging before it becomes approachable. The best vintages have incredible and aging potential fermented in new French oak barrels. Blaufränkisch is often blended with small amount of Cabernet Sauvignon and/or Merlot.

    Snoothrank:

This wine from the base of the alps fills the nose with smoke and moss, ... by ... by a flavors that remind of Blaufrankisch and Zweigelt wines of near-by Austria, but more mellow and a wider range of tastes. Very much a food wine but enjoyable to sip and savo Read More

  • Zantho Zweigelt 2006

    Snoothrank:

Not a whole lot happening in my mouth on this wine. The nose is nice but in the mouth this falls flat. The only things that I got were a little spice and a musty flavor. This bottle may have been bad. Read More

  • Zantho Zweigelt 2006

    Snoothrank:

A nice wine, soft nose with moist pine duff aromas; fresh fruit flavors with a little bite in the aftertaste. I'd try serving this with something unorthodox: Mexican fajitas or black bean soup laced with cummin and garnished with sour cream and fresh cilantro. Read More

  • Heinrich Blaufrankisch 2005

    Snoothrank:

Powerful mineral, earth and to a lesser extent, smoke and moss flavors. The fruit is present, but thin. Interesting. Would nicely accompany a meal of beef rouladen and dumplings. A fairly priced table wine. Read More
