History of the grape: Barbera is a native to the Piedmont, where it has been growing for centuries, and is now the fourth most planted grape in all of Italy. 7th century Lombard historian, Paul the Deacon, wrote that the Lombard troops defeated the Franks at the Battle of Refrancore after getting them schnoggered on the local wine, which was likely Barbera. The jugs had been scattered all over the field and the Franks willingly drank from them, and lost their coordination. 13th century documents from the Casale Monferrato have details of leasing agreements for vineyards planted with “de bons vitibus barbexinis,” which is Barbera. In 1798 Count Novolune, the deputy director of the agrarian society of Turin, named Barbera as one of the grapes in his list of “Vitis vinifera Montisferratensis,” the grapes surrounding Read more »

  • Castello di Neive Mattarello Barbera d'Alba DOC 2006

A very rich, earthy, smoky, tannic wine with lots of beautiful sour cherry. Nose was of sour cherry.Needs to be decanted or left open for some time -- tannins were too fierce when first opened but softened with time. Some smell of cranberries and dark berries when first opened.Note that it's very strong -- 14.5% alcohol. Read More

  • La Spinetta Rivetti Langhe Nebbiolo Starderi 2004

The '04 "Pin", from La Spinetta REALLY benefitted from a half hour decant. The bled of Barbera & Nebbiolo, as mentioned elsewhere, truly is a "Super Piedmont". The structure of the Nebbiolo lends finesse to an aggressive and prominent display of both fruit and ever-evolving complexity. In truth; I felt like my old friend Nebbiolo was tutoring me ... The only way I can describe this wine is SEXY. seductive crushed red fruits on the nose. the mouthfeel is lush like zindandel/petite sirah blend. dark plum and blackberry core with a creamy long finish. as the winemaker describes, there is a tart raw pomegranate zest to mid-palate. this went terrific with a thin crust supreme pizza. great value ... I have been so busy preparing for my trip to drink wine, in Piemonte, that I neglected to get this going properly!I have also been delinquent in posting my notes in general so I'll take this opportunity to go ahead and add a few nebbiolo notes.Starting off the Guiseppe Rinaldis fan-fricken-tastic Langhe Nebbiolo. Now this... Read More
