Named after the Roman god of wine, Bacchus is found in Canada’s westernmost province of British Columbia, in the United Kingdom, and most widely in its native Germany, where Bacchus flourishes in the heart of German bulk wine production and beer country. Two-thirds of Germany’s Bacchus plantings are found in the Rheinhessen with much of the rest in the Franconia district, an area famous for its Bavarian wheat beers and the unique smoky brews known as Rauchbier.

This productive cultivar was created by crossing Müller-Thurgau with a Silvaner-Riesling cross. Bacchus is a white wine-producing varietal that adapts to a broad range of climates and benefits from its ability to grow in less favorable vineyard sites than Riesling and even Müller-Thurgau. It produces full-bodied wines, with attractive fruit and floral characteristics, similar to Muscat. As an early budder, Bacchus can be susceptible to spring frosts, and its typical lack of acidity can prove challenging, particularly in hot vintages. In Read more »

Very nice Carneros Pinot. More on the red cherry vs black cherry side, medium acidity, nice body and balance. This is a touch lighter than the Russisan River Pinot we had earlier but it doesn't have quite the bite of acidity either. Read More

Was afraid that this was going to be passed its prime. On first opening there was some earth and leather notes but after some air time it opened up nicely with the above and also some nice ripe black cherry, prune and nice acidity. Plenty of layers left and very enjoyable although definitely turning the corner. Read More

An interesting blend of mainly Pinot Blanc and Bacchus. This wine is soft and aromatic with notes of peach, coconut, and flowers. Mid weight and good length and complexity. Soft tangy supportive acidity seems really well balanced here, as does just a touch of residual sugar. A winner for originality - I've never had anything quite like this wine. Read More

Was a bit hesitant opening this '04 Carneros pinot thinking it was probably well past its prime. After an hour in the decanter the flavors were somewhat muted but not bad or oxidized and there was a bit of acidity on the back end. After a bit more time and air this opened up very nicely with dark fruit, prunes, a touch of smoke and more of that ... Read More
