Auxerrois

Pinot Auxerrois (aka. Auxerrois Blanc)

Auxerrois' tendency towards low acidity makes it suitable to cooler climates, such as England, Ontario's Niagara Peninsula, and in British Columbia where it is grown with some success. A descendant of a Pinot Noir and a Gouais Blanc cross, it is relegated to the higher Haut-Rhin vineyards in Alsace, where it is most often blended into that region’s bulk wine, ‘Edelzwicker’. It is also grown in the northeast Moselle region of Germany. Wine made from Auxerrois tends to be dry, with a musky aroma and some floral and citrus character.

Auxerrois is an international name of intrigue. You are obscure, even in your Alsatian home, where you seek a secret refuge under the roof of ‘Edelzwicker’. With the trouble you’ve had in establishing your own identity in the Old World, one wonders why celebrities like Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, and Malbec would ever wish to borrow your name as an alias. Perhaps the cool environs of North America will give you a fresh start in a Read more »

  • Domaine Clos des Rochers Auxerrois Blanc 2009

    Snoothrank:

An amazing bottle, a must try! It lingers in your mouth long after every sip leaving behind luscious stone fruits, soft floral notes, minerality paired with saltiness (almost like seashells), and a pretty textured oily palette. wonderful! Read More

  • Until recently the only "wine" that I've enjoyed was Arbor Mist blackberry Merlot.  Well a few weeks ago a fellow co-worker suggested to try a Moscato.  She personally tried the Barefoot brand, so I followed her suggestion and LOVED it.  Since then I've tried Easley's Raggae Red, which I also loved, and Barefoot Riesling, Barefoot White Zinfande... • Bel Lago Winery Auxerrois 2007

    Snoothrank:

Similar to Alsatian Pinot Blanc. Pale straw with a touch of green in the glass. Lightly floral nose, thin body with considerable acidity. Crisp apple and citrus flavors dominate, with herbs and some minerality in the aftertaste. Slight toffee notes as it warms. Pleasant, but not very interesting. Read More

  • Trimbach Pinot Blanc Alsace Aoc 2006

    Snoothrank:

Like virtually all Alsatian Pinot Blancs, this particular wine is a blend-60% Pinot Auxerrois and 40% Pinot Blanc. The auxerrois adds a bit of spice. While it isn't as racy as many other Alsatian wines, it is a dependable wine- refreshing and dry. The color is light golden with nice transparency. There's a nice amount of acidity, notes of minera... Read More

  • Albert Mann Pinot Auxerrois Alsace Aoc Vieilles Vignes 2007

    Snoothrank:

A tasty Alsace with restrained but distinctive sourness, acidity, and fruit. Tested at room temp. Twist and pour. Tight nose of slightly sharp pear fruit and petrol. In the mouth had sweet and sour chewy pear and mildly sweet white grapefruit flavor with hints of mineral, white or yellow floral, and a touch of poultry fat. Finish lingered wi... Read More
