  • It’s time to talk about bubbles. For better or worse we associate New Year’s Eve with sparkling wine, though of course we could enjoy sparkling wine just about any time. One of the reasons we look to bubblies this time of year is that we are celebrating and sparkling wine is a celebratory wine, and often priced that way. But there are options ou... Read More

  • Domaine Mittnacht Cremant d'Alsace NV

    Snoothrank:

Mineral, fresh and yeasty with sweet herbal nuance on the nose with lovely hints of butter cookies and a touch of fennel seed spice on the nose. Starting out fairly dry in the mouth, this does gain a gentle sweetness on the midpalate displaying attractive sweet/tart apple and pear fruits with a little powdered sugar accent to the butter cookie n... • Tom,Who would've thought you'd get such useful consulting advice from this board?Seems like you have a good thing going, but an itch to experiment with something a little lesser known and exciting. Albarino strikes me as a bit of a fad (in the states at least). The Chenin Blanc suggestion is interesting, though you face tough and economical comp... Read More

  • If you were a big commercial operation, I would advise against taking out the Pinot Noir, because at least you can sell that.  Unless of course, you were going to plant Chardonnay, Merlot, or Cabernet Sauvignon which sell even better. That's all most people in the US know and that's what sells, so why martyr yourself trying to get people to try ... Read More

  • Hi, I'm Tom Vail.  With my wife Marion, we grow pinot noir and pinot gris in the Eola-Amity Hills AVA.  Our label is Calamity Hill Vineyard and Farm.  We produce fewer than 100 cases of pinot noir and 50 cases of pinot gris each vintage.  Our tasting room is only open Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends and this year on the weekend prior to Than... • As I sit here trying to come to some conclusion it occurs to me that perhaps I am going about this all wrong. I amafter all a wine snob. Yes, it’s true, I am biased and I know it. I am first and foremost a red wine drinkerso when I think of the best regions my thoughts automatically run towards things like Nebbiolo and Piedmont, PinotNoir and Bu... Read More

  • Joie Farm a Noble Blend 2012

    Snoothrank:

Being rudely interrupted by a power outage and tasting largely in the darkness, my nose detected a lot of sweet pear and delicious apple with perhaps some lychee nut ... more a sense of preserve than freshly picked fruit. On the palate, the wine is thick, viscous and slightly cloying (off-dry) but still balanced. Very tropical with the mouth-f... Read More

  • Wine is so confusing! I love a good Pinot Blanc, or Pinot Bianco. But what do I love when it's not necessarily a Pinot Blanc? Let me explain. Alsace is unique in France, having created its appellation system by varietal instead of region.  Except when they haven't. Alsace Pinot Gris is Pinot Gris, Alsace Riesling is Riesling. But when it comes t... Read More
