Aurore

(aka. Aurora, Siebel 5279)

A 19th century French hybrid, Aurore was created by Albert Seibel and named after the Roman goddess of dawn. At one time, Aurore was the most widely planted non-labrusca grape in New York State. In recent years, its acreage has been in constant decline, as producers have replaced it with other French/American hybrids and Vitis vinifera varieties. Aurore is used for a range of white wine styles including dry, off-dry and sparkling. This grape's early ripening tendency will be its saving grace, as it attempts to hold on to acreage in some climatically challenged states.

You landed on the Ellis Island pier,
a French immigrant with working class
parents. But you weren't going to get
lost in the crowd like the others. Your
personality shone like a ray of light,
and you have been willing to do just
about any act to keep yourself noticed
on the "off-Broadway" viticultural scene. – Description from Appellation America (view original content)

  • Few beverages are as closely linked with a day of year as Champagne is with New ... ... “Perle d’Aurore” from Burgundy (not so far from Champagne now is it?) is a rose-colored steal. An alternative, if you are inviting on a budget, is to throw a party and tell everyone to bring a bottle or two of their favorite bubbles instead of a host(ess) g... • Domaine de la Fouquette "Rosee d'Aurore" Côtes de Provence Rosé 2009

    Snoothrank:

Balanced and centered with a mature and complex taste. Well knit-together, although light-bodied its elements seem similar to a well-aged red (without the big effects). Nose of flowers, rocks, leaves, mild citrus, and mild bubblegum. Tastes similar on the palate, plus hints of strawberry and ripe hard cheese. Medium to short finish. Dry to... Read More

  • Mclaughlin Vineyards White Blend Vista Amber NV

    Snoothrank:

100% aurore grapes, this is a fruity wine with strong notes of honey. The skins of the aurore grapes are used during fermentation, and as a result the wine has a beautiful deep amber color. Theres a jewel-tone quality to the wine - it is absolutely gorgeous in the glass. The nose has light fruit notes with strong honey overtones, and the honey n... Read More

  • Mclaughlin Vineyards Coyote Blue NV

    Snoothrank:

The tasting notes describe this as a semi-dry white. A blend of aurore and vidal blanc grapes, the color is a beautiful medium-gold that catches the light. The nose has strong notes of green apple, and there is a tartness in the wine that off-sets the semi-sweetness beautifully. A friend described it as getting into the roof of your mouth - a ve... • Jerram Winery Gentle Sheperd Blanc NV

    Snoothrank:

A blend of Cayuga, Chardonnay and Aurore grapes, this is a richer and slightly sweeter wine than the White Frost. The color is a lovely medium yellow, and the nose crisp with faint notes of fruit and berries. The wine itself is crisp and smooth, with a beautiful finish. The sweetness is nicely balanced, and the wine is quite refreshing. The ... Read More
