Athiri is an ancient Greek variety found on the island of Santorini (or Thira as it was known in ancient times.) Athiri is a medium-bodied, high-acid grape that is most popularly blended into Santorini's PDO Santorini, PDO Nykteri and PDO Vinsanto wines. When blended with Assyrtiko, the grape helps to boost the wine's aromatic qualities. However, Athiri can also be vinified on its own to create a delightful, aromatic white wine for easy-drinking. – Description from Constance Chamberlain

  • Domaine Sigalas Aa Formerly Assyrtiko/athiri 2012

Subtle and complex on the nose with a fine blend of floral, dusty mineral and orchard fruit aromas. With excellent focus this enters the mouth broad and firm delivering layers of polleny floral, pithy citrus and minerally flavors that show excellent depth on the palate. This is at once lean and somewhat rich on the citrus, melon and faintly fig ... Read More

  • Gavalas is a family winery on Santorini making wine on the island since the end ... with Assyrtiko, Adaini and Athiri for attention on Santorini) still present some of the mineral and acid-driven flavors Santorini’s whites are famous for. The nose is lightly smoky with hints of sweet fruit over a mineral base but the palate is more assertive... Read More

  • Gavalas Xenoloo 2010

2010 Xeneloo 13% - A red wine made with ½ day skin contact then 8 to 12 months of barrel ageing. Some Malvasia spiciness great s the nose here along with gamy, foxy undertones and some black spice. Bright and a bit sweet up front before the fairly assertive, drying tannins emerge. The black cherry fruit here is accented with a touch of plum and... Read More
