Arneis

Common synonyms: Bianchetta, Bianchetta d'Alba, Bianchetta di Alba, Bianchetto, Bianchetto Albese, Bianchetto di Alba, Bianchetto di Verzuolo, Barolo Bianco, and Nebbiollo Bianco.

Parentage of the grape: Unknown. Planted for centuries in Piedmont.

History of the grape: The first records of Arneis plantings in Piedmont go back to the 1400s. Today, many call Arneis the most interesting white grape in Piedmont. But for a long time, little white wine was actually made from it. Instead, it was traditionally used to soften the tannins of the red Nebbiolo (perhaps the real reason it’s nicknamed “Barolo Bianco”) or, worse, to keep the attention of vineyard pests such as birds away from the more profitable red grapes. Finally in the 70s and 80s, great producers such as Ceretto began to make white wines worthy of this fine variety in significant quantity.

Characteristics of the grape: grapefruit, sour apple, white flower; medium acidity. Can be quite substantial in body.

Arneis on Snooth

  • Rocche Costamagna Arneis Langhe DOC 2010

    Snoothrank:

This is a 2010 Arneis from Piemonte, Italy and has an aromatic mix of mango and pear, with a hint of butterscotch. It has a mid-finish on the platte and balanced acidity. Best served at 46 degrees and pairs nicely with a poached white fish. Buy and enjoy now. Read More

  • I'm Paolo Demagistris, a wine enthusiast, heir with no grapes of a Barolo makers family. Spent some years in France, got good friends from Bordeaux and got a spell. Currently spending lot of time in Serbia, found a place so wine-wise unconventional, I love Slovenian wines. I'm Italian, I can't live without Chianti. Could drink millions of bottle... Read More

  •  I'm rather new to wine. I've only had de-alcoholized red wines from Ariel and I've had some red and white wines with some relatives who really know their wine. I remember enjoying it very much. But recently I've gotten into wine on my own. I recently picked up some Yellow Tail Shiraz from a nearby Total Wine store. Specifically, I picked up a f... Read More

  • Riccardo Vigna Organic Roero Arneis

    Snoothrank:

I can appreciate this wine for being organic and agree with this philosophy. It was pleasant on the nose with hints of golden delicious apples and honey. Disappointing on the palate, tasted like watered down apple juice despite 14% alcohol. Thin and weak. Not for me. Read More

  • I noticed that OutThere purchased seven bottles of a particular wine at $14 and it occurred to me that it was a $100 purchase, and enough to last about a week.  So I got curious, and mentioned in the thread that it would be interesting to know how much per week people spent.  Well, Emark has better records and more time on his hands than I do, a... • Paitin Roero Arneis Vigna Elisa 2010

    Snoothrank:

This Arneis has got nice layers of flavor making it diverse when it comes to food - soft white peach and floral notes dominate while pleasant mineral notes sweep up underneath. I want this medium-bodied white with grilled white fish or a beet and goat cheese salad with arugula. Read More
