Common synonyms: Bianchetta, Bianchetta d'Alba, Bianchetta di Alba, Bianchetto, Bianchetto Albese, Bianchetto di Alba, Bianchetto di Verzuolo, Barolo Bianco, and Nebbiollo Bianco.

Parentage of the grape: Unknown. Planted for centuries in Piedmont.

History of the grape: The first records of Arneis plantings in Piedmont go back to the 1400s in the Roero area. Today, many call Arneis the most interesting white grape in Piedmont, but for a long time, little white wine was actually made from it. Instead, it was traditionally used to soften the tannins of the red Nebbiolo (perhaps the real reason it’s nicknamed “Barolo Bianco”) or, worse, to keep the attention of vineyard pests such as birds away from the more profitable red grapes. It began to gain recognition in the 1980's when young, innovative winemakers began to explore its potentially.

Unfortunately, the grape is traditionally considered to need to be drunk young, within 2-3 year, but new winemaking techniques Read more »

Arneis on Snooth

  • Perhaps we could use a place to share recent purchases...Here are some '12 Burlotto Langhe Nebbiolo, which came highly recommended from a trusted friend who just got back from a month in Italy. I'm not seeing many available in the States quite yet, but was happy to find these locally. Read More

  • JD: Had to revisit this thread because yesterday at the end of work hours I ... wanted to then do a round of Arneis, but couldn't locate any on short notice.  (TraderJoe's only Italian white seems to be Pinot Grigio, and WineMine was really low on Italian whites--no Arneis at all.) so we moved right along to Barbera.  I bought one from TJ's ju... • Had some neighbors over Friday for an Italian themed potluck. Good thing I have neighbors who can cook and who appreciate my wine...makes for a nice group effort. Not much time to go over everything in detail, but I continue to enjoy 2011 Barbera d'Alba, and also the 2011 Tommasi Soave that I picked up last minute was a real surprise. I'll be buy... Read More

Lightest wine I have had in a while. Did not have the slight effervescence on ... ... on the tongue like other Arneis wines I have had, although I am not certain that the bottle had not been opened the night before. The palate had notes of grapefruit and a medium toasty finish. Wish it were more comple Read More

Fantastic value. I have come to like the Arneis and it went really well with Thai food tonight. Has a nose of grapefruit, lemon, and ripe melons. Palate of grapefruit, ripe mangoes, honeydew melons, and lemon. Has a mild effervescence and crisp acidity that adds to the refreshing nature of this wine. Fantastic everyday drinker. Read More

  • OK, Bocron, check this out.  Here we are going to have a discussion ... ... relatively recently I had an Arneis that I described has having a lemony tartness.  I also had a Vernaccia that I described as having some tartness and, also, minerality.  A Gavi that I described as having a citrus tartness (that's pretty close).  Overall, if I were to... • Just a quick hello. I am totally un-educated in the wine realm. As a matter of fact I never drank a glass until over age 40 and even then barely could finish it and would usually switch to a nice dark beer LOL.  Anyway about 2 years ago my good friend's husband decided he was going to show me what I was missing and every time we went out to dinn... • I’ve been on a bit of a get out of your comfort zone kick as of late, and ... planted from the indigenous Arneis and Cortese, to Chardonnay, Riesling and somewhat surprisingly Sauvignon Blanc, which seems to be quite popular with a broad range of producers. Fortunately for us there is also Nascetta, though the spelling seems yet to be agreed up... Read More

  • Cordero di Montezemolo Arneis 2012

Pears and apricot greet the nose in a fruity but cool style with some spicy pollen accents. On entry this is dry, clean and firm with a touch of attractive astringency to the very clear white stone fruit flavors. Theres a nice mineral note contrasting the subtly sweet fruit on the rather long, bitter apple skin flavored finish. 87pts Read More
