Arneis

Common synonyms: Bianchetta, Bianchetta d'Alba, Bianchetta di Alba, Bianchetto, Bianchetto Albese, Bianchetto di Alba, Bianchetto di Verzuolo, Barolo Bianco, and Nebbiollo Bianco.

Parentage of the grape: Unknown. Planted for centuries in Piedmont.

History of the grape: The first records of Arneis plantings in Piedmont go back to the 1400s in the Roero area. Today, many call Arneis the most interesting white grape in Piedmont, but for a long time, little white wine was actually made from it. Instead, it was traditionally used to soften the tannins of the red Nebbiolo (perhaps the real reason it’s nicknamed “Barolo Bianco”) or, worse, to keep the attention of vineyard pests such as birds away from the more profitable red grapes. It began to gain recognition in the 1980's when young, innovative winemakers began to explore its potentially.

Unfortunately, the grape is traditionally considered to need to be drunk young, within 2-3 year, but new winemaking techniques Read more »

Arneis on Snooth

  • I come from a wine retail background (owned a boutique wine store in New Zeland), and am now working in Sales and Marketing with my husband's family vineyard and winery in Martinborough. We're very much a family affair - which seems to becoming a rareity in New Zealand in the current economic climate. I write a wine column for a Wellington Lifes... Read More

  • I am pretty new to snooth, and just stumbled across the intro page.  I am the son of one of the owners of a very nice, very small winery in Southern Humboldt, CA.  We are between two fine Pinot areas, Sonoma and Oregon.  So, surpise!  In the right spots here, Pinot Noir does very well.  We also make Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc, along with met... • Palmina Arneis Santa Ynez Valley Honea Vineyard 2007

    Snoothrank:

Lean but expressive nose. Complex light and slightly petroleum vibe - it's putting out a lot of flavors. Acidic potpourri with nuts, flowers, and a nice bready finish. Read More

  • Palmina Arneis Santa Ynez Valley Honea Vineyard 2007

    Snoothrank:

Very bright captivating fruit aromas, a bit yeasty with a dusting of poultry spices, with ripe peach, pineapple, mango, apricot. The mouth is fairly acidic and compliments the fruit very well. Solid length. Ok I read some other reviews and then definitely got Nuts4Nuts. What a website! Read More

  • Palmina Arneis Santa Ynez Valley Honea Vineyard 2007

    Snoothrank:

almondlicious. I can see this with some creamy pasta or richly sauced seafood - although full-bodied, there is plenty of acidity to cut through and keep your palate from flabbing out. one of the better italo-american bottlings I've had. Read More

  • Palmina Arneis Santa Ynez Valley Honea Vineyard 2007

    Snoothrank:

The nose is a bit feisty; it's a roasted, vaguely candied smell, the exhaust from a roasted nut vendor on a winter's night. Thick and toasty and strange in the mouth: dried flowers, almonds, shriveled apricots. I feel like I shouldn't love you, but I do. Read More

  • Palmina Arneis Santa Ynez Valley Honea Vineyard 2007

    Snoothrank:

Deep burnt apple pie and spice nose with a vegetal character. Smooth mouthfeel, yet thick, honeyed tones, flowers (maybe honeysuckle on the finish), and toast flavors throughout. Read More
