Alicante Bouschet

Name of varietal: Alicante Bouschet

Common synonyms: Alicante Henri Bouschet, Alicante, Garnacha Tintorera (Spain), Alikant Buse, and many derivations of the two names together or apart

Parentage of the grape: Petit Bouchet, Grenache

History of the grape: Like all good biographies, the rise and fall of Alicante Bouschet begins with its grandparents. For centuries, one of the most widely planted grapes in France had been Aramon. Though relatively bland, it’s prone to high yields and one of the few resistant to powdery mildew. In 1824, horticulturalist Louis Bouschet, in an attempt to add color to Aramon but retain its easy cultivation, crossed it with Teinturier du Cher. Teinturiers (the name means “dyers”) are a type of grape that produces naturally red juice (as opposed to most other grapes which whether red or white, make white grape juice unless given time to macerate), and named it Petit Bouschet. in 1865, his son Henri chose to cross Petit Bouchet with Grenache, and created Read more »

Alicante Bouschet on Snooth

  • Fox asked me the other day if I was going to start a thread on this years growing season. I've been real busy with other things and haven't had much time to focus on the specifics of the 2013 season. But, things are getting off to an early start due to unusually warm Spring weather and a mild Winter where the Sierra snowpack is only 17% of norma... Read More

  • Being a cab lover I am hesitant to stray from what I like. On a recent occasion I had the opportunity to try a Zinfandel and to my amazement, it had some of the same attributes of the cabernets I love so well. I perused Snooth and stopped on a particular zin from Bogle vineyards. Gregory Dal Piaz gave it a nice rating and being a member of Snoot... Read More

I'm drinking this in 2013 - 5 years after release. Shows about 5cm of light orange to cartoon brick red with a dark purple to black center. Fairly slow forming tears that are not stained and are evenly spaced with about 10-15cm distance apart. Not super aromatic - I had to shove my nose in - but smells like healthy red fruit with mild tartness a... Read More

  • After an unseasonably warm streak, the cool weather season has descended on ... a bit cooler. Outside, Lodi Alicante Bouschet vineyards are up in crimson flames while the brittle gold and orange leaves of trees litter the streets and yards. Inside, hearty stews lie simmering in slow cookers, while the radiating warmth of a fire is enjoyed with... Read More

Winner dark in the glass. Very much an earthy/dusty nose. Pretty mellow on the tongue. If you are an anti fruit bomb kind of drinker, this is what you should try. This is a full-bodied wine that is mostly earth with some wood. It is quite smooth, although there is a bit of acid/tannin sharpness at the very back of the palate. Finishes very... Read More

  • Casal Branco Sociedade de Vinhos Sa Quinta Do Casal Branco Vinho Tinto Ribatejo 2007

A bit dull on the nose yet fairly complex, offering up notes of grapefruit, herbs, a bit of poop, black olive, chipotle and black currant fruit, along with decidedly peppery oak notes and complex juniper nuances. While spicy on the nose, this is rather straightforward in the mouth with attractive, supple tannins and herb-framed wild cherry fruit... Read More

  • Pt Esporão Reserva Tinto Portugal Alentejo Alentejo Herdade Do Esporao Trincadeira Preta Aragonez Cabernet Sauvignon Alicante Bouschet 2008

This is quite intensely perfumed with plenty of toasty oak notes. Powerful plum, dried herb and roasted fruit notes handle the oak well and offer up accents of licorice, violets and a hint of chipotle. Nice and fresh on entry, there's not a lot of flesh here and the slightly drying tannins poking out on the mid-palate attest to that. There's ple... Read More
