Alicante Bouschet

Name of varietal: Alicante Bouschet

Common synonyms: Alicante Henri Bouschet, Alicante, Garnacha Tintorera (Spain), Alikant Buse, and many derivations of the two names together or apart

Parentage of the grape: Petit Bouchet, Grenache

Though relatively bland, it’s prone to high yields and one of the few resistant to powdery mildew. In 1824, horticulturalist Louis Bouschet, in an attempt to add color to Aramon but retain its easy cultivation, crossed it with Teinturier du Cher. Teinturiers (the name means “dyers”) are a type of grape that produces naturally red juice (as opposed to most other grapes which whether red or white, make white grape juice unless given time to macerate), and named it Petit Bouschet. in 1865, his son Henri chose to cross Petit Bouchet with Grenache, and created Read more »

Alicante Bouschet on Snooth

  • Old World Winery Mendocino County Alicante Bouschet 2011

    Snoothrank:

Ruby red color. Musky, earthy nose. Delightfully light hit of acid fruit on the tip of the tongueplum, peach. Not for anybody who is looking for berry flavor. As the wine moves towards the back of the palate, I get a slate-like earthiness. Not a terribly full-bodied wine, but pretty easy to drink. Read More

    Snoothrank:

Murky marroon color in the glass. Nose of blackberry and plummake that prune. Fairly jammy on the tip of the tongue. This declines closer to neutral on subsequent tastesmay be a result of air, or maybe not. Serious tannin also neutralizes fruit. Some stoniness in the back of the palate. Read More

  • Made a trip to Pahrump Nevada today to play a round of golf with my friends at Mountain Falls GC. Amazing course! Rated #1 in Nevada and the #7 public course in America. Who would have thought a course that nice could be located smack dab in the middle of basically no-mans land.Because the trip is 45 minutes from Vegas, I decided to visit the wi... Read More

  • Thought I'd start a topic to see what "different" wines people are drinking. I've been on a hunt to find wines made from lesser known grapes or from unusual areas. Here's one of each. This is a rose made from Cinsault, not too unusual right? Well this is from the Bekaa Valley in Lebanon. Either they don't make very good wine in Lebanon or this bo... Read More
