Alicante Bouschet

Name of varietal: Alicante Bouschet

Common synonyms: Alicante Henri Bouschet, Alicante, Garnacha Tintorera (Spain), Alikant Buse, and many derivations of the two names together or apart

Parentage of the grape: Petit Bouchet, Grenache

History of the grape: Like all good biographies, the rise and fall of Alicante Bouschet begins with its grandparents. For centuries, one of the most widely planted grapes in France had been Aramon. Though relatively bland, it’s prone to high yields and one of the few resistant to powdery mildew. In 1824, horticulturalist Louis Bouschet, in an attempt to add color to Aramon but retain its easy cultivation, crossed it with Teinturier du Cher. Teinturiers (the name means “dyers”) are a type of grape that produces naturally red juice (as opposed to most other grapes which whether red or white, make white grape juice unless given time to macerate), and named it Petit Bouschet. in 1865, his son Henri chose to cross Petit Bouchet with Grenache, and created Read more »

Alicante Bouschet on Snooth

  • We did a field blend of Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, Carignane, Alicante Bouschet and Granache. Actually did well as it was tart and red fruited. Had a Sauv Blanc last night. Read More

  • Ridge Vineyards 'Three Valley' Three Valleys Zinfandel 2010

    Snoothrank:

Deep purple colour. Intense nose with notes of blackberry and burnt caramel/caedarwood. More of the same on the palate. My other half thought the tannin was just a little rough. Medium long length. Expected a little more from this wine given it's price up here in Canada. Read More

Looks pretty in the glass. Beautiful ruby color, light bodied. Bretty (as in vinyl) that leans towards slightly smokey. Tastes like Ocean Spray jellied cranberry sauce. That's about it. Read More

  • Herdade Do Peso Vinha Do Monte Alentejano 2011

    Snoothrank:

Nice dark red/purple color. Fairly big nose with plum, blueberry. Quite easy on the tongue. Not as full-bodied as I might have guessed from the dark color (looks can be deceiving). I do get that plum flavor and various berries. Some mint or cinnamon thing on the back of the tongue. Very mild acids and very mild tannins. A pretty good wine... Read More
