Alicante Bouschet

Name of varietal: Alicante Bouschet

Common synonyms: Alicante Henri Bouschet, Alicante, Garnacha Tintorera (Spain), Alikant Buse, and many derivations of the two names together or apart

Parentage of the grape: Petit Bouchet, Grenache

History of the grape: Like all good biographies, the rise and fall of Alicante Bouschet begins with its grandparents. For centuries, one of the most widely planted grapes in France had been Aramon. Though relatively bland, it’s prone to high yields and one of the few resistant to powdery mildew. In 1824, horticulturalist Louis Bouschet, in an attempt to add color to Aramon but retain its easy cultivation, crossed it with Teinturier du Cher. Teinturiers (the name means “dyers”) are a type of grape that produces naturally red juice (as opposed to most other grapes which whether red or white, make white grape juice unless given time to macerate), and named it Petit Bouschet. in 1865, his son Henri chose to cross Petit Bouchet with Grenache, and created Read more »

Alicante Bouschet on Snooth

  • 2012 Ridge Vineyards Geyserville Sonoma Zinfandel 2012

    Snoothrank:

The 2011- Had this at lunch the other day. I liked the blend, took some of the forward fruit typical of my experience with Zinfandel and replaced it with spice-hint of cinnamon and earth-clay. Very nice. Read More

  • Czarina -- I like all the Seghesios because they taste like wine--not something ... Petite Sirah, Carignane, and Alicante Bouschet.  I refained from mentioning this one to Czarina, because I wasn't sure it would fit her "fruit forward" request, and it would certainly not fit her budget.  This wine would probably cost her over $30.  Now, while t... • Le Lapin Speed Bump Wine NV

    Snoothrank:

No lot # Spicy and fruity on the nose with lots of peachy overtones to the core of brambly zinberry fruit which has a little cafe au lait edge to it. Sweet, round and simple with enough acidity to keep this fairly lively in the mouth and some tannins helping to add detail to the rather stewy, if fruity palate. The tannins build on the palate, he... Read More

  • Ridge Vineyards 'Three Valley' Three Valleys Zinfandel 2010

    Snoothrank:

Deep purple colour. Intense nose with notes of blackberry and burnt caramel/caedarwood. More of the same on the palate. My other half thought the tannin was just a little rough. Medium long length. Expected a little more from this wine given it's price up here in Canada. Read More
