Aleatico

Limited plantings of this minor red wine variety are found in warmer areas of California and Australia. Aleatico is more commonly grown in the Apulia and Abruzzo regions of southern and central Italy, on the islands of Elba and Corsica and occasionally further north in the central regions of Umbria and Tuscany. Aleatico has a strong Muscat, grape-like aroma, and is typically used to produce sweet red wines. Some believe that it is somehow related to Muscat of Alexandria, while others consider Sangiovese to be the more logical ancestor. However, DNA evaluation has not conclusively proven its lineage. There a scattering of acres of Aleatico in California. Given many red wine drinkers aversion to sweet wines, Aleatico is likely to live in relative obscurity in North America.

colorful red costumes and wild perfumed scent,
might be a little too forward for most of your
conservative neighbours in the southern Italian Read more »

  • Thought this was an interesting mailer I'd share with you all. Already forwarded the e-mail to Fox as he is one of the few champions of Dolcetto that I know. This would also fit in well with the "weekday wines" thread. Fox and I agreeing it's a good week day pasta night wine, or even a 1st wine in a flight of Northern Italian Reds. To all Best W... • Disapointed with my search results for Temecula. Most were from 2010...Anyway, we are going on a family vacation in the area and I need some assistance in choosing a few wineries to hit.  Most of my research so far has been the wineries' websites, which are obviously biased.  However, based on this I am thinking about Doffo, Wiens, and Wilson Cr... • Vie Cave Maremma Toscana IGT Antinori Fattoria Aldobrandes 2006

    Snoothrank:

Nice garnet color. Herbal notes and a little earthiness on the nose. Some tart cherry (just a hint) and raspberry overtones on the palate. Tannins have some grip but do not steal the show. I also pick up herbal notes on the finish, sage and rosemary. Not a long finish but hangs on just long enough for you to appreciate it. Overall well bal... Read More
