Albariño

Common synonyms: Alvariñho, Albarin Blanco, Cainho Branco, Albariña, Azal Blanco, Galego, Galeguinho

Parentage of the grape: Two theories: 1. Riesling 2. Petit Manseng, possibly just indigenous to Galicia

History of the grape: Legend has it that Cluny monks from Burgundy brought the parentage of the grape, either Riesling or Petit Manseng, to Galicia sometime in the 12th or 13th century and created the Albariño clone. Obviously, if the grape is proven to be indigenous to Spain, that blows that theory out of the water. Regardless, it became the mainstay grape of Rias Baixas in Galicia, and is also a popular white under its local names in Portugal. The grape is late to the party in the New World, and didn’t make the migration till the last part of the 20th century.

There has been some controversy as to the authenticity of the grape in Australia. In 2009, DNA evidence proved that in most fields, what was thought to be Albariño is in fact a Read more »

Albariño on Snooth

  • Adegas d'Altamira Albariño Rías Baixas Brandal 2006

    Snoothrank:

Lemon and green apples on the nose, very crisp (good acidity). Some minerality in the mid palette, clearly a good match with fish. A bit tart and sour on the finish, but nice. A good crisp, summery wine. Eucalyptus? Read More

Nice albarino. Rounder and a bit fatter than most albarinos but still a nice wine. Went very well with a smoked gouda. Read More

  • Martín Códax Albariño Rías Baixas Burgáns 2007

    Snoothrank:

Was actually with HondaJohn when i tried this. Lots of orange, lemon and other sweet citrus notes - agree with popsicle as a description. Nice and crisp and refreshing. Good acidity - a real summer wine. Fairly simple, but good at what it does. Would pair very well with chicken salad, or some other lighter summer fare. Read More

    Snoothrank:

Almost clear wine with a nose that at first is almost transparent, though with ... show some flesh fruit and "albarino" like fruit. In the mouth the acidity is fresh and alive with apple hints and peach notes. The acidity is wonderful, and rounds out with some hints of lemon. Really want to say more about this wine, but I have a strange feelin... Read More

  • Hello everyone... I'm new to Snooth, and actually new to wine as well. My 21st birthday is coming up in December and I want to have a very quiet get-together at my house and sip on some really good wine with a few friends. The only problem is, I don't really know what type of wine to try. If it helps, I love chocolate, caramel, and fruits of any... Read More
