Airén is a white Vinifiera variety, and is by acreage the most widely grown grape in the world. Native to Spain, this grape represents nearly 30% of grapes grown. However, these plantings are typically at low density, and the resulting wines can be bland and overly acidic. As such its principle use is in the manufacture of brandy, and many plantings are being uprooted in favor of planting red wine varieties. The varietal is most abundant in the DOs of Valdepenas and La Mancha.
Flavors: Apple, Citrus, Nut, Rose
Region(s): La Mancha
