Agiorgitiko

The term Agiorgitiko means "Saint George's grape". This could refer to Saint George's Day, a Greek celebration that occurs in November (around harvest time.) It may also refer to Saint George's Chapel in Nemea, Greece. Genetic tests have led scientists to believe that the grape is native to Greece. The wines made with Agiorgitiko in the Greek wine region of Nemea are nicknamed the "Blood of Hercules".

The wines created with the Agiorgitiko grape are known for their incrediby deep, plum-like purple color. This is true no matter where the grapes are grown. However, wines made with Agiorgitiko can taste very different depending on where the Agiorgitiko grapes are grown: when grapes are grown on hillside slopes, the wines tend to have high acidity and express sweet but strong spicy notes and red fruits. Grapes grown in warmer areas tend to be extremely jammy with big bright red and purple fruits on the palate. The large variations in Agiorgitiko grape quality from Read more »

Agiorgitiko on Snooth

  • Haggipavlu Agiorgitiko Nemea 2006

    Snoothrank:

    - The nose reminds me of plastic, but is still intriguing. - Medium body - I'd serve this as a table wine - I tried it at Dafni Greek Taverna in Times Square, NYC. It paired well with spanakopita and Greek salad. If you're in NYC and want to try this wine, definitely try it at Dafni: www.dafnitaverna.com/84/100 Read More

  • Gaia Estate Agiorgitiko Nemea 14-18h 2009

    Snoothrank:

I first tried this at the fabulous Zaitinya in Washington, D.C. A friend and I stopped in for a late lunch on a sweltering day. This is a perfect summer wine. Tart, dry, very refreshing yet with a definite presence of red fruit. It went beautifully with stuffed grape leaves and a lamb kebab. A great value at the price, too! Read More
