Abouriou

Overview

Abouriou is a black-skinned red wine grape grown mainly in South West France. It is primarily found as a blending component of red wines of the Côtes du Marmandais, a sub-region of Sud Ouest (or South West France) just east of Bordeaux.

Abouriou is a highly vigorous vine, capable of yielding large quantities of fruit each season. This key factor, combined with the grape’s naturally low acidity, rough tannins and high alcohol, make it an important constituent of blends in Southwest France. The vine’s vigor and low acid make it unsuitable for use in varietal wines, as the wines would lack freshness and concentration. However, they can provide added body, tannic structure and fruit to many blended wines from the region. From an economic standpoint, the vines’ yield and disease resistance are also particularly attractive to winegrowers.

Typically, Abouriou is co-fermented or blended with classic Bordeaux varieties such Read more »

Abouriou on Snooth

  • Old World Winery Abourious Russian River Valley Sherry Martinelli Vineyard 2012

    Snoothrank:

Big hit of fruit aromas on the nose. Sure enough, an intense hit of cherries on the tip of the tongue. However, strong acid keeps it from cough syrup territory. Also, mid-palate hit of earthiness mitigates the fruit. Quite strong tannin along with the acid content makes me think that this one is a strong candidate for cellar time. Read More

  • v v, I don't choose wines based on ABV, but does that one say 19%?  My ... one is not as unusual as the Abouriou that v v had a couple months ago, but from the same maker, Old World WInery, and, you have to agee, a varietal bottling that you don't see every day. Light-bodied, for a red wine.  Quite tart (I like it) with flavors of not-quite-rip... • Today I received the e-mail solicitation from Under the Wire.  I was in ... in ...  "Oh, the Abouriou.  You want to try some of that?"Off he went finding a bottle of that to open up.  He was surprised that the bottle that he opened (2012) was quite approachable.  He thought it would take a few years of bottle age to develop. He mentioned Alica... • Old World Winery Abourious Russian River Valley Sonoma California Abouriou Red 2011

    Snoothrank:

Really interesting Russian River red made from the fairly rare Abouriou grape. Ripe plum, mushroom and dried cranberry on the nose. There's medium smooth tannin and medium acidity on the palate. The flavor profile is ripe dark plum, a touch of grape stems, tobacco, a hint of smoke, macerated black cherry and a touch of menthol. Really enjoyable ... Read More

  • We're doing a long weekend in Russian River and Napa this ... a very nice red made from Abouriou, a very rare grape with only one 4 acre plot known to exist outside of random field vines.  There's some good info on his website. The wine tastes like a cross of a big RRV pinot and a lighter zin - really interesting. Second stop was at Russian Hil... Read More
