Wine Talk

You must be kidding...

Those of us with wine websites get the zaniest e-mail requests.

Usually the senders are searching for some obscure wine (often sweet) that they had on a trip to Europe (Mt. Vesuvius is a fave) and that they can't find now that they are back in the US (in Oklahoma or northern Florida or some other hopeless barren wasteland when it comes to wine selection).

However, there are also many people who write to ask about some bottle that they found in their garage, attic, basement, grandmother's house, etc. Often it is clear from their tone that they subscribe to the belief that all old bottles of wine are worth a lot - yes even Beaujolais Nouveau and California Chablis.

So, in the interest of humor, here's one of the early contenders for 2009 e-mail of the year about an empty bottle (it has been modified slightly to protect the innocent).

I am the recipient of a leftover auction item. The name on the bottle is Chianti. It has a lantern style top with a candle in it.

It is really dusty and there is sediment in the bottom. Is this a good wine or a good bottle?

I do not drink wine personally but the bottle (monstrosity) is so unique I'm not sure what to do with it.

Thank you for any information you can provide.

I would think the fact that it was leftover (i.e. no bids) at an auction would be a pretty clear message about its worth...haha

Someone wrote to an acquaintance who runs a competitor site to Snooth, that he purchased wine via their website and then when he drank it there was a petrified grape in the glass which he chipped a crown on, and he was seeking damages for.

Considering that the site, like ours, didnt sell wine I don't think the claim got that far...

I think the fact that it was used as a candle holder says as much about its worth when it actually had wine in it.
