Getting contest phishing spam in my email inbox from a faux Snooth lookalike. While I am no dummy and know this is a fraud it's probably best that it is brought to the attention of all members just in case. Here is the bulk of the text:

NOTIFICATION has left you a private message on Snooth!

What it means is that someone has the Snooth contact list. Not a great security affirmation.

Not necessarily the contact list. All they had to do was look at the people active in the forum.

I got the same thing, too, and notified both GregDP and Philip yesterday. Philip was quick to delete their account.

A variation on a Nigerian scam, of which I've see many over the years. Non-native English speaker aspect was clear. This was relatively sophisticated compared to some.

Was nice to fantasize I might have 100k more to spend on wine, or other things, this year. ;-) Didn't go to the email account, though. Doubt there was any phishing or similar dodginess there, but who knows? Haven't heard that the Nigerians are tech savvy, but stranger things are happening these days.

One thing that is a little curious, though, is I have an ongoing notification of one unopened message in my inbox, even though all my messages have been opened. This started when NOTIFICATION sent me a message, and continued even after their account was deleted.

Philip/Mark et al., any way to clean this up?

What strikes me is the the message came to my personal email account. It stated I had a personal message from Snooth. There was no message in my Snooth inbox. therefor the person sending the email had to have my and your and others email addresses.

My assumption is that by that time Philip had already deleted the account, so it would no longer show in your inbox. The notification itself came from Snooth, as it would for any other message left in your inbox.

I got one also saying I won $100,000.00 and immediately invisioned purchasing a case of Chateau Lafite Rothchild, some Layer Cake Malbec and a wine cellar. Looks like I'll have to continue finding great reasonable wine purchases on my own (with the help of Snooth) and  re-surface my old wine rack.

Thanks for helping clear this up DM, yes, outthere, it was someone that created a user account on snooth and then emailed people via the site (they did not have access to anyone's email addresses, they just send user>user emails). Once i realized there was a problem i "obliterated" their account, which deletes all traces of their presence, which is why when you logged in there was no message from them.

Hope that helps clear things up.

Philip

Thanks for clarifying that publicly, Philip. I'm still getting that phantom notification of (1) unread message, even though all messages are read. Any way to check on that?
