GDP on Wine

Would anybody travel for a wine dinner?

Original post by Gregory Dal Piaz, Aug 7, 2012.

I'm thinking it would be nice to get as many of you together as possible in one place for a dinner. Is that even feasible?

I would prefer NYC of course, it's local for me, but more to the point I can bring a ton of wine to dinner easily.

If this is support for the idea maybe we can begin to throw around some dates?

So Friday November 2nd looks like the date. Who is in? Anyone able to attend either a daytime tasting before or maybe an afternoon tasting on Saturday? I can organize either!

Either Friday or Saturday should work with Friday being preferable.

Thanks,

Once you set a date (seems like first week in November), I will seriously consider attending - whether in NYC or Cali.  It is not quite clear from the thread if something has actually been decided (and Peking Duck is perfectly copacetic), but let me know if dates are set.

I am intrigued with the banter about the opinions of the two Greg's so must see this in the flesh which explains my earlier comment.

hey Zuf - if you're out east for whatever reason, you have to give a holler. We'll just get some people together.

The formal date seems to be Nov. 2 in the evening.  I will be coming to town later in the month (Nov. 18-22 for Thanksgiving and family visits) and imagine that I'll get together with either or both of the Gregs and anyone else who is around.  There are definitely plenty of Snoothers in NYC, including some who don't post a lot but are reading and communicating via other means because they already know each other--picked up on that last year.  But I think dinner at Peking Duck on Nov. 2 is the formally recognized event, and your best chance to actually watch GdP abuse GregT, and see how GregT shrugs it all off like it was nothing.  Such love between these guys as you've never seen, it'll make you forget Brian Piccolo and Gale Sayers.

I really wish I could swing two trips to NYC in one month, although I did see JD and outthere pretty recently out here.  BTW, was the theme decided on?

Fox - it's because he's a loutish sort who knows no better. Fundamentally he's not a bad guy, just unrefined and rather lacking in the nuanced sensibility that distinguishes the civilized from the lower orders.  But he has a lot of wine to share!

OMG... wish I could be there to see that!

Lower orders... puhleeze.  Just look at GregT's avatar!  He eats crickets with his MOUTH open!

Okay, so is it a bushbaby or what?  In which case NG stole the words out of my mouth:

"Galagos are said to have evolved from 40-50 million year old, slow moving prosimians that could not compete with larger, faster primates in Africa."

I mean, prosimians.  Not even full simians. ;-) Talk about pots and kettles.

I am in for Friday if I can secure reasonable accomodations (somewhat iffy right now due to marathon weekend). If theres also something Saturday, I can definitelly do that.

If I can swing by for a few days on my own around that all hallowed eve period, I will be in touch.  In fact, if things work out over the next few weeks, I will contact a few of you through side-channels to ensure that the necessary connections are made.  I like the measured response to my comment, and hope to meet up with some of you soon.

Are we still looking at the 1990 theme for this event?

Good question, maybe shoot for 1990 but if not, then make it something from the 90's?!

Anyway, I have a 96' Dunn Napa Valley I plan to ship in advance.

And drinking well!  Did a tasting of some 2006s vs 2007s earlier in the week and the one that took top honors for me was the 2006 Dunn - much better than the 2007, which I had somewhere down in the middle of the pack.  So 10 years on, he repeated himself.

Getting this back on track.

Who is in for Nov2?

I have a few options for dinner reservations, and just want to be sure I book enough room for all who want to join us.

The original theme was 1990.

I made a trip to the cellar two weeks ago and forgot to pick up some wines, so we might have to be a bit adaptable here, not sure I can make it back out there as this month seems to be going by way too fast.

i'm pretty sure I can come up with a pair of 1990 barolo and maybe something else.

Still looking forward to Nov 2.  Is the place going to be the Peking Duck House?
