GDP on Wine

Would anybody travel for a wine dinner?

Original post by Gregory Dal Piaz, Aug 7, 2012.

I'm thinking it would be nice to get as many of you together as possible in one place for a dinner. Is that even feasible?

I would prefer NYC of course, it's local for me, but more to the point I can bring a ton of wine to dinner easily.

If this is support for the idea maybe we can begin to throw around some dates?

I just checked and the wedding is November 3rd, so it would actually be November 2nd for me. Seems like that might work out better anyway being on a Friday.

Fox - Pingus or Latour? Think we better keep trying, will have to explore the wine themed names some more, subtle or obvious. I'm good with Champagne/Sparkling. Schram's seems to do the trick any time I'm in the mood for bubbly. Pretty excited that his birth year looks like a domestic winner.

Hey Fox - whenever it is, we can round up some folks.  I may be having a nephew from England over as well - not sure of the exact dates.  And wife is doing a show at Carnegie around then, so maybe we can work that in too.

"wife is doing a show at Carnegie?"

What the heck?  You don't mean making a scene at a deli, do you?  Okay, tell me the dates and if you want to give me some info via private message, do that.

So are we talking Nov 2 now?

My preferred theme for the evening?

1990!

A wonderful vintage almost everywhere with wines that are still youthful

I mean who would complain about

1990 Champagne

1990 Mosel

1990 Brunello

1990 Chianti

1990 Barolo

190 Rioja

1990 Napa Cabernet

1990 Chateauneuf du Pape

1990 Hermitage

1990 Bordeaux

190 Burgundy

1990 Recioto

1990 Port

Fox, lease let me know when you might be coming as well, and then lets work on a west coast Snooth dinner. Bay area better this time?

Fox - I don't know this person but here's a note about the production. She's been doing them there the past few years to open the season at the small house but this year they're moving to the bigger hall and it's going to be a little later.

And here's a flyer:

That looks totally cool.  I'm not that big a buff of modern music, but I may have to rethink this

I have to comment on the "squirmed through Wagner or endless recitative of Baroque opera" line.  I happen to like Wagner a lot (and, in all honesty, I probably agree with any slight of opera from the Baroque period), but  I had a colleague who insisted that a Wagner opera was nothing but four hours of continuous recitative.

Uh-oh, I just looked at the calendar.  Won't be able to do it.  (That'll save some dinero.)

I like the East and West coast idea.  If a West coast dinner happens I will do what I can to make the scene.  I would love the chance to meet up with you all "in real life"

Cheers!

Hey Greg,

I would love to join you, love to meet some other Snooth members. Love Peaking Duck House, 1990 sound like a great theme.

So does this make Nov. 2nd (fri) or 4th (sun) the most likely candidates for now? Will they really let us BYO on a Friday?

GdP - 1979 calis sounds like an excellent daytime tasting, as it happens to be my birth year. Also, there are seldom old cali wines available over here. 1990 is lovely too, but I have nothing to contribute from that vintage that I know of (reminds me I MUST organize my cellar. MUST.).

Either way, since I have to fly over from Europe, I need to time it with other activities. Early to November could be good, before I go to Australia for a few months. Ah, I do love my travel schedule this fall...

If anyone is unable to contribute to the theme, particularly those travlling to get here, I will cover them . I have plenty of wine and the point is to share it after all!

1979 Cali Cabs will be fun, so I'm putting that on the tentative schedule.

What's better for you guys - a Friday or a Sunday (as long as we are trying to accommodate the wedding planning of JONDERRY)? Makes no difference to me!

Sorry Erica et. all, I should've checked the dates first. The only night I have to attend the tasting is Friday, November 2nd. Am thinking about shipping over a 90 Dunn Howell Mountain...

Okay, so I'm going to miss the Nov. 2 thing, but I'll get together with the Gregs later in November, it sounds like. We can discuss off the forum and figure out whether there should be a theme or where to go. Maybe we can work on a Bay Area event in Spring.

11/2 is a definite possibility for me - was already planning to be in NYC for the marathon on Sunday (my sis is running), so put me down as a tentative if I can make it work to get into town a day or two earlier. I don't have any 1990s in my cellar though.

Whichever day, I think I have something from 1990 if that's what we're drinking but it's the one year I have next to nothing from. I have 1989s and 1991s.  From 1990 the only thing I can think of is probably Dunn and I think something N Rhone but I have to check when I get back home next week.

I'm interested.  We are certainly talking far enough in advance that I anyone local should be able to clear their schedule.  I'll be sure to contribute something interesting.

I would love to participate, but getting to NYC isn't as easy as it used to be before several airline mergers and cancellations of non-stops from GR to La Guardia!  But if I am in town for business I'd certainly like to join the fun!

There is a couple of interesting lots of good Bordeaux including interesting vintages in the 80s and 90s for sale at a Danish auction house right now. Just talked to the person in charge for an article, and he says they come from a good cellar. If they stay in range, I might pick one up and perhaps I'll have a 1990 to contribute :)

GdP, aren't you coming out for Taste of Sonoma in September? What better opportunity for a West Coast get-together?

Thread drift... BTW, anyone else going to Taste of Sonoma?

Peking Duck House?  Andrea and i are there.  Love it in the Chinatown location (my vote).  The downstairs area would be perfect.  I think the food in the downtown branch is better also.  Putting Nov. 2 on the calendar.  Now to see what's left from 1990.
