GDP on Wine

Snooth User: Gregory Dal Piaz

Would anybody travel for a wine dinner?

Posted by Gregory Dal Piaz, Aug 7, 2012.

I'm thinking it would be nice to get as many of you together as possible in one place for a dinner. Is that even feasible?

I would prefer NYC of course, it's local for me, but more to the point I can bring a ton of wine to dinner easily.

If this is support for the idea maybe we can begin to throw around some dates?

Hmm.  I did mention that I would be in NYC and not in thrall to my kids on Nov. 18th and 19th, a Sunday evening and the following Monday.  Of course, others might have fled NYC for the T-Day break by then.  Might even be able to do Tuesday the 20th--we do have a babysitter we use in NYC.

LA is also somewhat possible, and I have lots of availability for events in SF/Oakland, Napa, Sonoma, and, if necessary, San Jose.

But NYC and lots of your wine on those dates is my idea of great.

Sounds like a great idea. I would love to head to NYC for holidays especially with your offer GDP! But of course prefer west coast.

Will be tough for me regardless, but can't rule it out.

Actually wait, I'll be on the East Coast November 4th for a wedding in Rhode Island, which would probably make me available in NYC come Nov 3rd.

Traveling to NYC is probably not going to make it into my budget.

I agree that NYC would be perfect place, though.  It would be easier for you to coordinate since you know the lay of the land, logistics would be much easier and you would have resources to help you out.

I am very OK witih vicarious enjoyment.  I suggest you set it up for NYC.  I have to believe that there are numerous Snoothers in that geography who would jump on the chance.  If the stars align, it looks like the Pacific Time Zone could be represented by some combination of the above posters.  I'm sure that there would be plenty of reports for me to enjoy.

Of course, if you can swing another California visit, I will do my best to be there.

We could do Virtual Duck Taco Night at Snooth, too. (I hear there's a pretty good Chinatown not too far from Snooth's offices, and Duck Taco NIght doesn't require a sophisticated kitchen.  Plus maybe Eric Guido wants to be involved in the cooking. If we are going to do that, I would happily run around on 11/19 getting the ducks and other ingredients.  But that's just my angle. If you decide to do that, I will ship some Roar PN back to Snooth offices for the event.  Maybe a horizontal of all the SVDs and the general appellation wine or something.

JD, you should be a father any minute now, right? Have you picked a label for your first vintage? Just our idea, but we felt the kids were never too young to travel.  Both of them went to the east coast within the first two months of life.

Peking Duck House! In midtown, easy BYOB place would be happy to welcome us.

Hey, even if it's just you, me and GregT, that sounds like a winner.

On the event or on Greg T?

Yes, I went tasting at VinItaly with GregT and also at the October Snooth "Drink Greg's Wine" event.  We keep in regular contact off the forums, too.  Guess I'm just a glutton for punishment.

Seriously, he's a funny and opinionated guy who is willing to guess completely wrong on a wine if that's what he thinks it is.  And he knows a thousand times more about it than I do.  And GdP calls him the most horrible names and he puts up with it--in fact, he makes it a badge of honor.  Other than that, I have no idea what GdP means.

So does that mean I'm really just a loser?

Damn.

But Fox, no need to rule out coming over to the house if you're in Bkn.

Peking Duck House will accommodate, as will the one in Chinatown.  Depending on the day, there are usually some venues that will allow BYO - usually that's on Mondays and Tuesdays however, and in November, that may not be an option - the restaurants gotta make their money after all.  But wherever works for me.

That's right Fox, it should be happening later in the Month or even the first few days of September but you never know. Unfortunately it looks like we'll be on passing ships from the left to right coast in November...In all likelihood I can't pull another east coast trip two weeks after my annual sojourn, but maybe we'll both be able to get some festive tastings in.

I might fly over from Sweden if I can fit it in with other trips. Might be going through NYC in end October/early November and would love if we could all  meet for dinner then! I'll bring some random bottles not exported to (or hard to find in) the US. How about some Swedish No'Bel or some Selosse champagne? :)

Oh, actually, I could probably do November 3rd just like Jon! Maybe we could do more than one dinner, if the first one is much earlier this fall?

I am up for multiple dinners, in fact that would be great. Maybe one each on the east and west coasts?

So is November 3 the first proposed date for NYC?

I have so much wine to share I'm excited to start planning for it!

Maybe aI can integrate a daytime tasting on that day, I have this set of 1979 Cali Cabs in magnums that needs a good crowd, not to mention drinking, and then we can head over to the restaurant for feasting!

GregT, just means that you have the patience of a saint.

I think a Champagne tasting for JD is in order. (BTW, how about naming your scion Pingus or Latour, just to see if they will send you a bottle for doing it... or how about Unico if you only intend to have one child? ;-)

Okay, this is getting interesting, I really hope we can do something Nov. 18 or 19.  We can also get the ducks take-out and turn them into duck tacos--the place I stay in NYC (UWS) is a little small, but could handle maybe a dozen folks buffet style, and the kitchen is more than good enough to run to gourmet garage and get the fixings for my home-made mango salsa, as well as heating up beans and rice.  Just in case there's a moratorium on BYOB.

Whoops, looks like Nov. 3 is in the lead.  I can also do an SF area event if that's the case.  And I can always get together with GregT separately.
