Worst Wine Ever...

What's the worst wine you have ever had? I had some Don Luciano Shiraz over the weekend (which is a $4.00 wine I picked up at Wal-Mart...just to see). I had had the Don Luciano Chardonnay and it was OK, but the Shiraz I had smelled like road kill (very heavy sulfur)--I wonder if I got a bad bottle.  Has anyone else tried it?

I don't shop at Wal-Mart.

Maybe I'm just ignorant but I have a real hard time spending $2 to $7 on a bottle of wine and having any expectations at all. I've been surprised a few times but have been disappointed more often. Then again you can spend $28 on a bottle of urinal cake disguised as Petite Sirah so what do I know. ;-)

Had a friend bring a two buck chuck (charles shaw) cab to a dinner party I hosted.....yikes.. She insisted it was great, and opened it up to pour me some.  Blechhh!  Was horrible.  I had no problem telling her we would NOT be drinking that tonite.  We are good enough friends that I could say that.

I had another horrendous wine, but fortunately do not remember the name.  It was an unfortunate evening at an awful low end chain Italian restaurant that I will never go back to.  Never heard of any of the wines on their list... ordered their most popular chard.  It tasted like Pine sol cleaning fluid mixed with formaldehyde!  I mean, it was undrinkable.  I didn't think someone could do that to any wine without trying!

Your chard description, napagirl, reminds me of a whole slew of Italian whites I encountered on travels in the '70s. Also Spanish (and several French) whites that made it to Japan around that time. Better shipping (including refrigerated containers) and storage management for the Japanese, and overall production quality control for the Italians, have meant that we have a whole new wine world these days. Sounds like a timeslip with your bottle... ;-)

I had some pretty terrible wines on a wine tasting course I did at uni last year.

They used cheap cask wines to demonstrate how different factors (e.g. residual sugar levels, tannin levels, alcohol levels, sourness, biterness, etc) affected taste. The modified wines generally didn't taste all that good, but the unmodified (control) wines were generally pretty terrible too. Some were really quite undrinkable, so it was no hardship to spit them.

Despite this, it did show how these factors affected wine quite well.. Luckily, we got to try some pretty good wines on the same course once we'd got past that part.

Having lunch at the CARDOZO HOTEL in South Beach / Miami ....PROSECCO/VENETO/ZONIN...the taste of the smell of stale beer !!!!

Would not get into why Prosecco was ordered and not POL ROGER !

The worst cheap wine I ever tried was Mondavi Private Selection Pinot Noir.  Ugh.  It wasn't flawed, it just tasted dirty and totally unbalanced. 

The worst pricier bottle is Stag's Leap Artemis.  We sell a ton of this at my work (why?  I have no idea). It's sloppy wine making, and is a mess on the tongue, with a super short finish.  I'd drink this for $5, but not a penny more, let alone $40.

These are not vintage specific.

The worst wine I ever tasted and actually didn't finish was Layer Cake,an Australian wine.  I think I tried the Syrah which to me tasted like cough syrup and chocolate, yes I know hence the Choc cake on the lable but yuck! It to me tasted more like a Port which I do not enjoy, not into wine I have to chew.

I dont shop at Walmart either. However that is besides the point.   The worst wine Ive drank had to be this Duck Walk Boysenberry Fruit Wine, I dont think its available at Walmart, thank goodness. Its the closest thing to mouthwash I have experienced. Unfortunately, I cant say too much for Duck Walk for me being a Long Islander, but they have some pretty good wines for the price.  Ill agree with Amour as I should have ordered the Pol Roger champagne.

I beg to differ!

I have tasted Charles Shaw Red. 

It is not bad.

Not great, but not bad.

You must allow it to breathe. I give it 20 minutes.

Furthermore, in NYC it costs $3 (@ Trader Joe's). A perfect pick when entertaining guests who routinely plop ice cubes into their wine glasses.

Doctor Bob, the thing with the Shaw line is that there's extreme bottle variance, since the grapes come from all over.  There may be randon acceptable bottles, but the majority (that I've tasted) couldn't even be cooked with.

I agree with newyorkwineguy, any "fruit" based wine is awful.  There are local wineries here in Iowa, at least they call themselves wineries, that only make fruit wines, I'm talking about the Amana Colonies wines.  I would honestly rather drink cough syrup then  those old fruity sugar wines. However, The Millstream Brewery in Amana might almost make up for their lack of wine making, they have an AWESOME Colony Oatmeal Stout

There's some ordinary wines here in Peru. Especially those made from the Isabella grape. But all of them are drinkable, just way too sweet.

@DRBob.... the charles shaw I had couldn't be made to breathe... it was a goner.  No amount of CPR could have brought it back.  And GDD is correct, I would NEVER cook with that swill.  Would ruin perfectly good food.  But I suppose if you are serving those who plop ice cubes into wine...  :-)

@dmcker- sorry to hear of your experiences with the various whites in the '70's... I never thought wine could taste like poison!  Besides the obvious desire to not drink anything that tastes badly, I was really afraid that the wine had some type of cleaning fluid in it!  Just awful.  I may try to slink by that awful place just to read the wine list so I can post the name here (if I recognize it).

@amour- funny, your comment on that Prosecco.  I tried a couple of proseccos several years back, when they were touted as the hottest thing.  I, personally, did not like any of them.  I found them ALL to have that smell of stale beer!  I think Prosecco is just not for me.  Will stick with traditional sparklers.

I don't know, I have drank some pretty awful stuff in my time.  I remember my days in college, Boonesfarm Strawberry, Boonesfarm Apple, yuck.  I grew up around mainly unsophisticated "country" folk, who were making their own wine.  I was introduced to some of this stuff when I was quite young.  It was some pretty sweet and syrupy, just yuck.  Sometimes if I bring a bottle to a family gathering alot of my kin will not partake of the wine I bring.  It's still a pretty provincial lot.  Just wanted to chime in....

As for MY worst wine?  Hmmm.. I've certainly had some off wines that I'd rank as the worst wine experiences of my life.. but those were more so due to cork-taint, or having been fed re-corked wine which had since become salad dressing/vinegar.  In recent memory, I had a Greek wine that was just not nice, I'll find the bottle tonight and post more details.

@Philip - I spoke with Jake Beckett while he was in Calgary representing Peachy Canyon @ the California Wine Fair, and we got to talking about his new startup.  When he handed me the card, I couldn't help but notice the name and design/labelling.  It's not the direction I would go, but he said he's having fun with it!  Unfortunately hey didn't have any there to taste.  Being that he has the family history & experience being involved with Peachy Canyon, there is some serious potential despite the 'out-there' labelling.  He mentioned that being good friends with Christian from Four Vines has influenced his direction on this endeavour... and wants to get crazy with things and have some fun.  I'll overlook a label anyday, if the wine is worthwhile.

Beckett is making a gigantic business mistake with the lable and the Peachy name. My experience has been that this is a turn off. I would walk by the bottle if I found it at my local store. It is going to hurt sales, and not help.

Two Buck Chuck can, and often is, very bad, but I have had an occasional one that wasn't.  However, that was years ago when there was a glut of low priced grapes on the market and no other low-end wine makers.  Now there are dozens of low end wine makers that change their name regularly and crank out all sorts of wine just above the $2 price mark that Chuck has.

I would have to say one of the worst wine I have had in recent memory was Gallo reserve cab. One of their new line with the redwood trees on the label.  I suppose they are trying to make us believe they have changed their company and are now in the “fine wine” market.  NOT!  The stuff is only good for opening clogged drains.
