Woodbridge by Robert Mondavi Vs. Robert Mondavi private selection??
Posted by Drunk as a Skunk, Oct 11.

There is obviously a price difference, but is it all made in the same place?? Is the woodbridge label using a lesser quality grape?

From their 2007 press release announcing the introduction of Vinetta: "Robert Mondavi Private Selection is produced by Centerra Wine Company, the popular-priced and premium wine producer of Constellation Wines U.S.,"

The grapes are sourced from various sites in the Central Coast or North Coast, depending on the variety.

The Woodbridge winery was purchased in 1978 with money he got from the lawsuit against his brother and mother. It's in Lodi, near his boyhood home and the grapes are from the area. Different wineries, winemakers, grapes, and wines.

I believe Private Selection is supposed to be one level above Woodbridge in the Mondavi Portfolio with varities such as Syrah, Pinot Grigio, and the like. Perhaps they are all varietal wines, I don't think Woodbridge are necessarily varietal wines.

Might be the other way as far as the varietal wines go. The PS line has a couple blends - the Vinetta and a meritage wine. I can't think of any Woodbridge that aren't monovarietal, but may be wrong. Did a quick look at the Woodbridge site and didn't see any. I think the idea of both was to take advantage of vineyards in the respective areas. Woodbridge has been so bad for so long I can't remember the last time I tried one. I always thought it was a badly-crafted supermarket wine. Can't remember a PS recently either. What do you think happens to them going forward? Mondavi has a lot of different lines out and they get confusing if they're all called Robert Mondavi something.

That could be the case.

You recently blind tasted a Mondavi PS Syrah.
