Wines from Oz on offer in the States

Posted by dmcker, Mar 6, 2011.

Since my queries of this nature are usually tagged to the end of other threads of (somehwat) related nature, I figured I'd start one of dedicated nature. Hopefully this'll be easier to search for and come back to in the future.

Here's an offer from HDH in Chicago. Anything of particular interest, or of relatively good pricing? This offer seems a bit more narrow in bandwidth, and targeted towards the high end, than others I've queried about from Benchmark in NoCal.

Not sure how the formatting will come across, but here goes...

D – an intersting group, as an aside do you or others find that many wine writers seem to rate older vintages tougher than more current vintages.  My reason for asking is that the 90 Grange is one of my favourite vintages of Grange and now as a 20yo wine is IMHO right at its sweet point as a wine moving into the mature stage.  I would expect the wine to b remain a compelling example of the Penfolds Shiraz style for another 15-20 years but it is now definitely in the window to shows it best.  As an example I would certainly prefer the 90 Grange over the 01 Grange and the current auction realisations are 90 Grange 500-700 [+15%commission], 01 Grange 300-380 [+15% commission].  No doubt that the 90 is far better value for $380 [given ex rate is near parity]  I suspect pricing reflects the low AUD rate when 90 would have been sourced?

Anyway on the list below I wil give my Ratings and any comments and

Wine Rating Price

1990 Penfolds Grange 92 WA 98 STH – Great wine tried it on numerous occasions over last 3 years and is well worth a look.

$380 / bottle

1996 Three Rivers Vintners (Chris Ringland) Shiraz (owc) 100 WA STH – Never tried, this is one of the Parker Cult wines and at $950 is big ask to try.  Chris is a great winemaker and does produce great wines.

$950 / bottle

1997 Henschke Shiraz, Hill of Grace 95 WS 94+ STH, I have tried this one a couple of years ago and is a very wine, my concern is that a lot of 97 wines hit their peak early although HOG does tend to outlive most, at 14yo it should be at its peak and compared to the current vintage cost of $600 represents good value.  Auction range here is 270-330.  This is a single vineyard shiraz and is I think more in line with your preference for elegance over strength.  I would not hesitate to have a look at that price

$240 / bottle

2001 Grant Burge Wines Shiraz, Meshach 94 WS  91 STH, Again have a few in the cellar and it is not a bad wine from a very hot vintage.  Certainly wshould get another 5+ years but made in the big Barossan style, at the price is reasonable value and I would think a good way to get a guage on 10yo typical Barossa Shiraz [02 is a substanially more elegant wine]

$76.50 / bottle

2001 Hobbs Vintners Shiraz 96 WA  - STH not tried – I do not know much about these guys

$80 / bottle

2001 Penfolds Grange 98+ WA – 92+ STH As I indicated above 01 is a good Grange and certainly a star from a tough vintage, the price seems a bit on the high side and it will benefit another 5 years.

$400 / bottle

2001 Torbreck Vintners Shiraz, The Factor 98 WA STH 90+, Again a bit of a US cult favourite, have not tried the 01 for 5-6 years.  It is a good Barossa Shiraz but without a recent tasting I am reluctant to recommend

$110 / bottle

2002 Clarendon Hills Old Vines Grenache, Romas Vineyard 96 WA STH 93+ Have not tried for 3-4 years but is an excellent vintage, Roman Bratisuik does do very good Aussie Grenache and focuses on single vineyard offerings.  Just reluctant to recommend based on age and lack of recent tasting

$70 / bottle

2002 Clarendon Hills Syrah, Brookman Vineyard 96 WA STH 94 As per above this should be an excellent wine did have a look at a tasting couple of years ago and it was looking very smart – at $65 worth a look

$65 / bottle

2002 Penny's Hill Shiraz, Footprint 95-97 WA STH 93, again lack of recent tastings has me relectant to recommend but is usually a very reliable example of McLaren Vale SHiraz

$55 / bottle

2003 Clarendon Hills Syrah, Piggott Range Vineyard 98 WA STH 92, Vintage worries me as I have rarely experienced any great 03’s from SA.  Last taste was on release back in 05/06. I am certainly reluctant to recommend at the price without a recent tasting

$150 / bottle

2004 Torbreck Vintners Shiraz, Run Rig 99 WA STH 96 – Great wine, had the 04 couple of months ago and it is looking in excellent form, needs another 5-10 years and my only reluctance is that being a relatively young winery the track record is still work in progress.  Made in the Rhone Style co-fermented with Viognier it is a benchmark SA Rhone style. But – an imperial and $1,400 I would try a source a tasting first. Pricing is at the top end

$1,400 / imperial

2004 Two Hands Wines Shiraz, Ares 96+ WA  STH – not tried, relatively new winery with strong Napa Bonds as I have mentioned in previous posts.  Tough to recommend as I have not tried it, but does have a prominent reputation, $150 top price and well….

$150 / bottle

2004 d'Arenberg Wines Shiraz, The Dead Arm 95+ WA STH 94+ Great example of McLaren Vale Shiraz.  I have tried this wine on many occasions and it is and will continue to improve with age.  Genuine example what McLaren Vale can produce.  Definitely good value at $60 = approx current vintage price, definetly one to try.

$60 / bottle

2005 Mollydooker Shiraz, Enchanted Path 96 WA  STH – not tried, never been a real Mollydooker fan, no real reason just not been on my radar, probably as it has been developed as an export label

$95 / bottle

2005 Torbreck Vintners Shiraz, Run Rig 98+ WA STH – 93+, see my comments on the 04 above, generally the 05’s from  Barossa a little hotter and alcoholic, but this is a very good wine, $175 is below retail so is good value on that count, based on my latest tasting about 6 months ago the wine is well worth trying but is a leap of faith at $175.  Again it is a Shiraz Viognier blend and a good expression of Barossa meets Rhone

$175 / bottle

2006 Kaesler Wines & Vineyards Shiraz, Old Bastard 96 WA  STH 92+ Reid Boswell makes big and I mean big Barossa shiraz, this is a knock your socks of Shiraz made in the typical Barossa style but certainly tests the taste buds.  Have not tried since release so not sure how well it has settled down as a 5 year old wine.  Generally 06 was a very good Barossa vintage

$125 / bottle

2006 Mollydooker Shiraz, Carnival of Love 97 WA STH – not tried, never been a real Mollydooker fan, no real reason just not been on my radar, probably as it has been developed as an export label

$110 / bottle

If I was buying from this lot my order would be in terms of value/preference etc

90 Penfolds Grange

04 D'Arenburg Dead Arm

97 Henschke Hill of Grace

02 Clarendon Hills Brookman

02 Penny's Hill Footprint

Let me know if you try any of this lot

SH-perhaps you could put together a lists of $50-60 bottles that the average wine drinker could give a shot?  at $50ish i believe many could give a shot without the shock of not being disappointed with spending too much if it wasn't their "cup of tea".  been poking around some everydayers from down under and been pretty happy with them.  had some of the Torbeck and wasn't blown away...it was just ok but at the expense of giving it a try?  anyhow, i really trust your opinions and always look forward to your thoughts on wine in your area.

D-great thread! it seems most of my reading on wine has been comming from snooth these days.  it's nice to get opinions from those on the outside drinking in!

D

The Noble is a sticky, not a comparable to a great Sauterne, but not bad, often had it on holidays with some fresh fruit to start a lazy day [11am+ start] - $17 is a very good price

D'Arry original - 2000 vintage too hot and plenty of better vintages to have a look a a wine which is a good solid quaffer

Giaconda Warner - is a wine I would be intrigued to get your view, Rick Kinzbrunner is trying to build a very Rhone style shiraz from the cool climate of Beechworth should be a wine in your zone - at $69 is below retail relaease for the wine

MAK  - never heard of let alone tried [$5 a bottle?]

Again 01 is not my favourite vintage and I can't reconcile a WA98 for this wine, to me the 98, 02 & 04 much better. $75 is well below current release price.  Octavious is a big Barossa shiraz matured in small barrells - highly Oak influenced, when right excellent when not it is too much like Chocolate toothpicks!

D - Another big list

06 Amon Ra - is a good price, generally a very big shiraz, 06 is pretty good but 97-100 well .... kinda takes you to GDP's article on wine scores!!!

02 Rolf Binder is an excellent wine the price is very reasoanable

01 Shirvington is not a wine I know but 01 generally was hot and alcoholic

06 Noon is very good but that price seems excessive - I paid $35 for it

04 Schild is expensive  - current vintage retail 16.99

05 Clarendon Hills? is that Cab Sav or Shiraz, never tried the Cab

Of the Cherry pick list I would only go for the 06 John Duvall Eligo

I do like the Kumeu River Chardonnays from NZ, and although Felton Road does not tickle your fancy the 08 Block 5 is well below what I pay for it and I think it is a very good expression of Central Otago Pinot

What was 98 like for Burgundy, I like the Meo Camuzet's I have tried

The Lalala pack seems a pretty reasonable price?  What was 07 like in the Rhone?

The 90 La Chave against the 90 Grange would be a great one to do blind

D - Sorry for the delay, been a big month in the Harvey world, Easter break, week in the Barossa Valley, middle sons 21st, my 52nd, and three big wine company assignments.

Must admit entertaining 250-300 20-25yo's was fun.  Nothing has changed in a generation other than the girls are far more self assured and confident which is a good thing.

It made me realise that the Gen X, Y ,Z thing is all marketing crap and we the only real difference is communication infrastructure and the internet.

Sex Drugs and Rock and Roll still rule [and off course beer and cheap spirits]

Wine is on the agenda but it is an emerging theme just like with us!!!

On the list my top ones are [must admit this looks like a bit of a "parker" list

2002 D'Arenburg Dead Arm

2004 D'Arenburg Dead Arm

2002 Elderton Command Shiraz

2004 Elderton Command Shiraz

2004 Jim Barry Armagh [expensive but half price to local retail]

Other than 03 the Kay Bros are very good

Torbeck and Two Hands are Parker favourites - they are good wines but tend to be "big" and expensive

On the Two Hands Bella's Garden - I think they made a mistake as I thought it was the 08 not the 05 that made the WS list???

I uust admit the pricing is generally very good and if you get any would value your opinion [along with any Snoother community views]

Thanks, Stephen.

Sounds like you had some fun, and yes, since I have two daughters in that age range, I agree with you on your observations. Makes me remember one of my paternal grandmother's nuggets about 'there's nothing new under the sun'. Just marketing spin. Wonder if Greek or Roman parents had much anything different to say after their children started participating in the Bacchanalia mysteries....

My suspicion is the only things that have changed are:

  • technology
  • alcohol brands
  • available drugs
  • music tastes
  • public acceptance [up and down] of what younger people do

Probably not as much change in three and four as we might think, nor even five.

I tend to agree although music in ancient greece might have some subtle differences

Obviously you haven't spent a lot of time in Mykonos or Ibiza or Goa or Koh Phangan or at Burning Man these days... ;-)

Although I did hear that Pythagoras had a big hit with "Rock the Triangle" and evidently Hippocrates wrote the original version of "Doctor Doctor give me the News"
