Wineries to visit around Montalcino

Posted by EddieL, May 2, 2011.

Hi guys,

I am getting married in July and we are going in Italy for our honeymoon. I am in charge with the itinerary and being a huge fan of wines, I will include a day or two visiting wineries. I like Brunello very much so Montalcino and the surroundings are definitely a stop. In fact we will be spending a night in that area. Now I need some recommendations for nice places to go to. Which wineries are spectacular? Where should we stop for lunch? What's the most romantic spot to have dinner? My wife is not into wines as much as I am, so we'll keep the wine-related activities to a minimum, but I would really appreciate if you guys can make some recommendations for us. I see there are some nice wine stores in Montalcino, so that is a good place to stop and buy Brunellos, but we would also like to visit a winery or two.

Thanks in advance,

Eddie

I had the same plan for this year's two year anniversary with my wife.  After checking the finances, doesn't look like it will happen as we're sticking with the more prudent option of keeping it local.

Your timing should be great since the 2006 vintage is being hailed as the best contemporary vintage for Brunello by far.  Would assume that the highest scoring wineries will be difficult to get into, but definitely do some research.  James Suckling has done an extensive report on the vintage...www.jamessuckling.com so you might consider subscribing.

But from going off the list, La Poderina, Capanna, Castello Banfi, La Serena, etc.

On good labels for Brunello, here's an informative thread from a while back:

Good Brunellos and other reds from Montalcino

On traveling to and through the area, GregDP posted a nine part series back in the autumn of 2009 on winetasting through Tuscany and Umbria. Here is the first article in the series, which is a good starting point considering your interests.

Oh yeah, and congratulations on your upcoming marriage. :-)

Thank you both for your replies and your warm wishes. After I posted my message, I found the old thread about good Brunellos and printed it. The messages there include a bunch of wineries and some great recommendations for places to eat. Thanks a lot again.

Congratulations.  My husband and I went to Italy in 2006 for our honeymoon and I created a blog of our trip that you might want to read.  We were in the Montalcino area for 5 days and it may give you some good suggestions as to placed to go and restaruants.  http://our-trip-to-italy.blogspot.com/

Thank you, Sharon. Very kind of you to share this information with us. We were considering booking our night at Castelo di Velona, but in the end we booked a night at Palazzo del Capitano in San Quirico D'Orcia, which is only a few kilometers away from Montalcino. Man, I wish I had read your blog before.
