Wine Storage....warmer or cooler?

Posted by WineVirginOne, Dec 13, 2010.

I would like to store a few cases of Marietta Old Vine Lot #52.  My 2 choices are to store them in my garage which will be between 45 and 60 degrees (no light) or my house which will fluctuate between 65 and 75.

Which of the 2 will be best if I drank the 2 cases over the next 12 months?

Thanks

If you're drinking them over 12 months, the storage won't be as important as if you were storing them long term.  That said, I always err on the side of cooler.  Neither situation is ideal, but you obviously already know that.

Any direct sun on the garage walls? Any power tools/equipment used there? Etc.

Need a little more info.

If you're definitely drinking them within 12 months, then an interior closet is as good as any other option.

No direct sun in the garage...but it's got flourscent lights on for about 10 hours a week.  Could throw a towel over them?

Yes, I use power tools in there but not very often.

Interior closet in the house or in the garage?  I live in NY.

Which would be the better of the 2 options or would they go bad at some point in either spot?

In simplest terms, cool temperatures slow down aging, while warmer temperatures speed it up.  Really warm temperatures can damage your wine, but as long as it really doesn't get over 75 in the garage, the chances of that are slim.

Sounds like the garage is the way to go here?

I would suggest cooler as well. You garage sounds fine for short-term storage but what will happen in there when the summer comes?

The garage is mostly below ground and cement all around.  Even on days that it's 90 degrees out...in the closet and covered it should stay below 75.  OR....if it get's above I may have to have a mad rush to drink it all :0)
