- Wine Pairing - What would you pair with a dinner of pasta with a (turkey) meat sauce?
I'm not usually one to pair my wines with food, but this one got me thinking...
Would it automatically be a red (like a pinot or shiraz), because of the pasta and marinara sauce?
or Would it be a white, because of the turkey? (Isn't poultry usually paired with whites?)
Usually, I just drink whatever I am feeling that day and not worry about matching, but I am curious with this one.
Thanks for your help!!

The the tomato in the marinara will be the dominant flavor and the one I would think you should try to match the wine with. I like a medium bodied pinot or sangiovese with a marinara but there are plenty of other wines that can go as well, including some bolder reds or spicier whites. Remember the red and white rule is more like a guideline than a hard and fast rule.
There is a little trick I learned that will help make food and wine pairing decidely simple from now on. Take the wine you'd like to serve and put a little in the dish you're preparing. You can get away with some pretty off the wall pairings this way if you're so inclined.

Thanks for your input, Jimmy! The Pinot will likely rank high on the list tonight, unless the heat and humidity going on here do us in... If it does, we'll definitely try your cooking tip with our "off the wall pairing" of a Santa Barbara dry riesling or NZ Sav. Blanc.

Sorry if I'm too late to help but I would grab a Barbera to pair with this dish. Nothing works better with Red Sauce, Pasta, (you could add poultry to that list) and warm weather than a Barbera. Typically fruity with zippy acidity and adds all kinds of flavors when paired with sauces.
Here are a few I've enjoyed quite a bit
