Wine gift?

Posted by sks279, Oct 18, 2009.

What is a good red or white wine to gift a beginner, within a price range of $20-30? I have read recent posts on the Rieslings and Zinfandels but most people seem to be "either red or white". Anybody?

Do you know if this person prefers red or white?

If you are looking for a good $20 range zin, you may want to look at "Seven Deadly Zins". 2006 is ok, but get the 2005 if you can. I know quite a few "wine snobs" who really like it, and also several people who are sort of new to wine that also really like it.

Michael David also has a good Syrah "6 Sense 2006" very reasonably priced and a really good 85%Petite Sirah-15% Petit Verdot "Petite Petit 2007" never disappointed me yet! get some for yourself as well!!!

For a true beginner i always like to give a pair of bottle. Say a Bordeaux and California Cab based wine or a Sancerre and New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. The idea is to give someone wines with contrasting styles so that they can begin to understand their own preferences. Do you know much about what kind of foods this person enjoys? it a good proxy for how their palate might evolve.

I shall definitely try out Seven Deadly Zins. I was thinking of the "pair of bottles" idea too. Thanks GDP! I know that they love barbeques as well as white meats so would be open to most kinds of food pairings. Also, what is your opinion on a sparkling wine like Gloria Ferrer?
