Why five new articles posted all at once?

Posted by dmcker, Sep 30, 2010.

Am just curious as a matter of publishing policy why Snooth would want to post five new articles all at the same time? So far I've received email notification for none. Though I haven't read any of them yet, they all look potentially interesting. I can't help but wonder, however, how Snooth's readership is to digest them all at once... ;-)

It's a new feature - slideshows. Today's email will feature on of them. I put together five different topics to help gauge where the interest for contetn presented this way might lay.

I'll fill you on the details as they become avaialble.

Slideshows are useful ways to grab user eyeballs and click fingers (usually quite successful linkbait).

I've only looked at the October Top 10 so far but I have a couple of questions:

  • Wouldn't it be better to have a link to the Snooth page for the wine in each description to the right of the picture? I saw a couple of wines I was curious about but I'd have to do a Google search to know where one of them was even from, or a Winsearcher search to figure out who might have them...
  • Is burying the slideshows in the voluminous ranks of the articles the best way to go? Why not carve out a space for them on the Snooth homepage?

Great points.

Today is just day one, but you'll find them already featured on every wine's detail page.

We'll be adding more information as we go along, and I might just sneak back in and add the links to the individual wines this afternoon.

Feedback like this is very valuable, and we'll certainly be paying attention and implementing suggestions.

Among the others, I thought the food and wine pairing slideshow was excellent. The 10 commonly asked wine questions piece was also well done.

I thought the 'most popular types of wine' piece had a title that was misleading, since it was actually about specific grape varietals (and the styles of wine they produce, but still...). The Italian landscape slideshow was, as always, lusciously stimulating. I liked the Barolo Castle and Montepulciano town shots best, but wondered why you didn't include some of those shots you posted way back when, of the views near your place in the Alto Adige and Trentino area, on page two of the old Forum thread on the most beautiful wine regions in the world. Those were shockingly beautiful shots, IMHO.

The commonly asked questions slideshow is what you sent your email notification out on, so it's now received more than 20 comments, while the others none yet (except for one of mine on the wine/food matching piece). Unfortunately the level of many of the comments doesn't show the knowledge and understanding you might hope for, even if a few are spot on.

They would all benefit from interaction here in the Forum. How to pull from there to here? A lot better discussion could then occur, from which I assume just about everyone would feel that they'd gained....

So why doesn't Snooth figure a way to reproduce an article in the forum, and link the comments back and forth between each of the two sections/locations on Snooth's site? Would increase your traffic to some degree, and also help out the users with a much better, more informed, more balanced discussion.

Not sure about the search engine. I entered 'five articles at once' (not having remembered the whole title) and this thread didn't show up in the results, at all.

Anyway, was curious about your slideshow policy. Is just about every new article going to be a slide show? Takes the novelty away from the slide shows ('ho-hum, another slide show...'), and isn't always the best way to present info.

I'm also seeing a lot of blank real estate on the home page. As mentioned above, this would be a prime location to place a slideshow window and pull people into the site, generate more traffic, etc.

I've signed up for all the articles.  I've yet to receive one.

Just fyi.
