Introduce Yourself

Who is on Snooth currently? Are you new, experienced, professional?

Posted by napagirl68, Aug 18, 2012.

I used to spend a LOT of time on snooth, but a job assignment took me away for awhile.  I am seeing some new faces, and some old.  As one who is catching up, I would like to hear from some new people here.   I think/hope we all share not only a love for wine, but a desire to share our experience.  Welcome, new Snoothers!

Hey napagirl, welcome back!   I have been around Snooth since 2008, only running the tech side of the company for the last few months, so that's sort of like being "new".  I've been spending a lot of time improving the wine search behind the scenes these last couple of months, some front-facing developments here coming soon - bringing it up because I remember you wanted to see improvements in that part of the site ;)

I guess the newer folks aren't so interested in chiming in, another option is to always just naturally talk to them on the threads or PM them for more info!

Anyway, it's good to see a good amount of new blood on the site. The mentorship thing is interesting too.

Hi Jon!  Yeah, I saw a bunch of new people here, and also missing some of the old ones.  And a few REALLY old ones still hanging on!

Chris,  You've done a great job at cleaning up the wine search.  Yay!  I have been trying to play catch up by adding in as many wines as I have my notes for.    It is so nice to use the system now.

What is that thing?

Looks like it drank too much Pinot Noir!

Chris,  You've done a great job at cleaning up the wine search.  Yay!

Ha, really?  Lots of incremental work has gone in since July, but there are some bigger improvements that will be released this year.  We're essentially hand-verifying a large set of wines, but also including anything "community-verified" within the set, meaning if you add your notes then those wines will become part of the new cleaner wine search, planned to be released later this year.  I'll post details when we make a release!

I'm supposed to spend a lot of time on Snooth but job assignments have been taking me away from the game as well. I hope some new contributors chime in here as this Editor in Chief Wino would love to hear from you all. And you might even get invited to a great dinner, wine tasting, or educational event if you're lucky.

Napagirl, when should we plan for a west Coast Snooth dinner? Last one was in LA< next one will be in or near wine country!

Hey, GDP, don't I get a say in when and where the Bay Area/NorCal Wine country dinner happens?  I live in the most central place, in a neighborhood full of great restaurants (I bet I can get Pizzaiolo to let us BYOB in exchange for the publicity, or somewhere almost as good), and I ought to get some credit for instigating last year's Snooth meet-up, the first to bring together TWO West Coasters and the usual gang of winos from NYC... plus I just got snookered out of a November meet up by someone coming from Europe. ;-)

NG, glad to be hearing from you again.

And Chris, I'm really looking forward to the improved wine database.  I landed here in the first place when I was looking for information on Spanish wines I had purchased in my then blissful ignorance--Snooth came up first for just about everything.  Since then, it's been hard even searching after arriving here--too many indeterminate names, missing vintages, redundancies.  Have to say that the "cellar database tracking" website I use is accumulating more of those as well and allowing users to add vintages and new wines is dirtying things up there pretty well.  Now, if those two parties could patch up their old differences and allow more integration--one has a good cellar system, one has great forums, but sharing tasting notes would be the killer app--all the other sites would be left in the dust.

Maybe I've inspired a newbie to post to flame me for complaining about this wonderful free (heck, better than free!) service. ;-)

BTW, love Greg's new profile photo.  You'd think NG had met him--it's a perfect likeness even before drinking pinot!

Foxall, I wholeheartedly endorse the idea of this "cellar database tracking" integration - we'd absolutely love to have an app that posts to both services, and properly reconciles the wine info.  The idea of complete, clean wine data is a project of tremendous scope, and takes a combination of good algorithms managing quality source info, and also properly incentivized crowd-sourcing.  You'll see us keep taking steps in that direction, and trying to help as many people as we can in the short-term.

Re: flaming - I'm fond of the complaints, as long as people are reasonably nice with their feedback ;)

One of the bigger posters, currently on somewhat of a hiatus, got flamed by a follower who criticized him for "complaining" about some feature that had changed, hence my comment.  It's always seemed to me that the site takes user feedback into consideration, albeit occasionally after a change that disrupts things for a while.  That's good for everyone, and I really didn't get the whole flame.

Chris, I'll send you a private message with some of my observations about what I do and don't like about the wine database and searching if that's okay.

In or near Wine Country has my full attention. I mentioned in another thread that Taste of Sonoma was coming u p. 2 weeks away now. GdP don't you come out for this every year? The weather out here is great until the end of October. Just sayin.

Anyhow, if you get it going on up this way count me in. We're not big travelers. Overnight stays are tough for us and I don't drive after drinking so you see what I'm up against. Looks like it will be early 2013 at ths point. Weather usually blows around that the of year.

The wine database progress is great to hear...seriously once that is handled Snooth's relevance can't help but rise in the wine world.

This is another great development!

Is it a bushbaby or not?  I've been wondering.  Interesting animal: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galago

The bachelor community doesn't really sound like GregT so much, but he does drink wine alone...

Hello, not exactly new, but I seldom post.  Been a wine hobbyist for about 40 years, but recently don't follow as closely as I used to.

How far have I strayed?  I haven't had a half-dozen bottles yet this month.  Earlier, I was telling someone about picking wines for a birthday dinner about 7 years ago - tasted around 50 wines that October seeking the bottles I wanted to serve.

Things change.
