Whats up with Sake?
Posted by Philip, Apr 3, 2008.

I'm on the fence. I think i like it, maybe not warm, but some of them chilled are very nice. Just wish I knew more without having to immerse myself as I dont have the time. Apart from wikipedia does anyone have any suggestions of what I can read, and how I can build an appreciation?

I have Sake, Pure + Simple (http://www.powells.com/biblio/1-9781880656372-7) but as I've not read another book on sake, I can't say speak to its relative quality.

Many sake brands sell in small bottles (250ml? can't remember), making tasting a variety easier. I usually buy my sake at Mitsuwa in Edge Hill, NJ.

I've also found What to Drink with What You Eat (http://www.powells.com/biblio/1-9780821257180-3) very helpful , although I can't remember its recommended pairing for sake other than with sashimi (but not rice).

It only pairs Sake with sashimi? Thats a tad limiting, apart from the odd take out its not like i ever sashimi my own fillets of fish. What pairs with sushi then?

Its not like the sushi rice actually tastes of much anyway.

Sake is a wonderful treat warm, better than hot chocolate sometimes. I don't know anything about it, why am I writing this?

For Philadelphia's cherry blossom festival, there will be a Sake Fest at Loews hotel next Wednesday (the 9th) from 6 to 8:30, $55, http://www.sakefest.com Benefits the Japan American Society of Greater Philadelphia.

@Phillip: sashimi was the only thing I remembered. The book and I were not in the same county when I wrote that.

@Philip, I'm surprised at pairing sake with sashimi... on definitely doesn't pair anything alcoholic with sushi. Green tea is best. (Anything more and you wouldn't be able to discern the flavor of the rice, which is what you're supposed to care about with maki and nigiri.)

There are certainly some lighter sake's that i dont think would be overly dominant, but i get the inference - sashimi and sushi rice is very delicate, you dont want to blow that flavor away.

I've rated 787 wines, but only 5 sake's: http://www.snooth.com/my-wines/Philip/sake/1/0/0/125/000/0/10/date+desc

I think its time to go grab a few bottles - if anyone has any suggestions that I can find in a store near me (Astor or Union Square Wines), I'll be sure to give them a whirl.

ok, i grabbed a few sake's from the store today - reviews to come soon. One was a Jumanji (spelling?), the other one was cloudy and slightly fizzy, which sounded intriguing.
