Whatcha drinking tonight?

Original post by outthere, Jun 11, 2012.

There hasn't been one of these threads here in quite some time so I thought I'd start it up again. Weather is warm here so I popped a Rosé.

What are you drinking?

I actually don't mind the Richard's songs...but I hear ya.

Bon Voyage Fox, hopefully you can keep posting while on break...it's gonna be tough with you gone and D/GT continuing to hibernate.

We enjoyed a 2005 Angelo e Figli Nebbiolo last night that was a real bargain @ $12 from LastBollteWines.com.

Just shared a Finca Vieja Joven with a friend... pretty good but I didn't fancy the slight metallic nose...

Drinking a 'Coto de Imaz Reserva 2004' Rioja with a superb Spanish stew (Chorizo, chicken, potatoes, onions, garlic) cooked by my son.

Lovely lunch, lovely wine complemented the meal beautifully, great way to spend a Sunday, will finish the rest of the bottle watching Spain v Italy Euro Championship final. Viva Espana !

"Mining the metadata of NG's photo, I now know where she lives. ;-)

Now if NG can mine my posts for my IP address and trace it to a real address, she can come over while I am gone and steal all my Ramey, Bell, Dunn, and Roar. Unless my nephew beats her to it."

Jeez, what a total stalker you are, foxall.... scary!!!

I just opened a 2009 Falcor Trousseau gris, RRV.  It is nice on this warm eve... a little acidic on the approach.

No pix attached today :-)

If I ever get home from work I'll be cracking open something. Been a nice busy day!

an hour later...

Boy I have been lucky on the Nebbiolos this past week. This was a gift from my Daughters' boyfriend and has been sitting for a little while. Looks like my cellar is a bit damp where I was storing this one as the label is crinkling up. The cork had me worried as it was stained to within 1/4 of the foil capsule. But the wine is wonderful.

Dark crimson with a little bricking. Nose is earthy and fruity at the same time with a nice bramble quality to it. Entry is delicate with creamy ripe blackberry initially, followed by sour black cherry and firm dusty tannins that lingered on through the finish and beyond making it a touch bitter. A little bit of everything with this wine. 14% abv was not a factor. Reminds me of a Scherrer OMV short of the bitter ending.

Atta girl, I almost grabbed a Petite Sirah tonight. 4 bottles though?

I only have one of those left. I'd be interested in your impression. My last one was a bruiser.

"Drank over 4 days. Not for the AFWE! Dark purple to black in color. Blueberry, smoked meat and menthol on the nose with the menthol blowing off by the 4th day. Big full mouth of blueberry, blackberry and spice. Rich and velvety texture. Huge tannins took all of the 4 days to resolve and were dusty/lightly chalky on last sip. Really showing well right now but make sure it gets plenty of air."

Decided to go with a red blend from Portugal called Boas Vinhas Tinto Red Blend (2009).  Red fruit, soft tannins and an elegant finish made it perfect for the pasta with shrimp I was having.

Is that what they mean by "road tar?"  ;-)

As a lover of Petite Sirah, I have to say that looks a bit extreme, but, then again, I'd love to try it.

So, how was it?

I stored the bottles cork down so when I pulled the cork it had a ton of sediment on it. Then I decanted it and it left even more sediment behind. Double decanted and left in the cellar overnight Tuesday for Wednesday evening.

It was fantastic. Bob Foley knows PS.

Nice wines guys...

Found a nice value red from Almansa at my neighbor's yesterday, I seem to get pomegranate from most of the Spanish reds I enjoy. Obviously, not much oak on this one, light to medium bodied, shortish finish but plenty tasty.

Okay, here's the lowdown on the last few days of wine in ITALY. We had a barely average chianti our second night in Rome. Drank beer at da Baffetto (thanks Mike for the reco--great pizza. Had anice Falanghina the next night in Rome. First night in Stresa had a Giacosa dolcetto that rocked. Tonight we had a half bottle of chiarlo's Roero Arneis that was terrific and really inexpensive then came back to the hotel and drank half a bottle of Ghemme I bought at the wine store. Owner tells me she has a killer dolcetto from a female winemaker I have to try. We'll finish off that ghemme tomorrow.

NG, I can't really peel off the metadata. But we both bought that wine from BP, I bet. It was blockbuster.
