What is Your Wine Norm

Posted by Coleney, Jun 20, 2017.

How much wine is enough for you? (of course it depends on the purpose of drinking):)

How much is too much?

How do you find a balance?

I usually have a glass, but not everyday.  On Fridays or one weekend evening with dinner and company I might have the equivalent of a bottle, but over a few hours and with food.  The most dangerous thing for me is to keep pouring little amounts and lose track.  Any more than a bottle and a quarter and I'm asking for trouble the next morning.

Tremendous variation over the course of the year. Sometimes weeks or even months without (detox, training, etc.). Sometimes a couple bottles a week (often when eating alone). Sometimes a couple bottles a night (with plenty of company), in some cases continuing for a week straight or more when lots of entertaining gets scheduled in.

When I was actively running my own business in the late '80s and all through the '90s I'd have to entertain at least five nights a week (four or even five with clients, one with staff), more than half of the time we'd be drinking wine and related digestifs rather than beer or shochu or whisky or cocktails. Good thing Japanese tax law allowed a lot of entertaining and 'meetings costs' writeoffs. Then during the naughties, when I was very actively 'retired' all over various regions and nations, would be months on end with cocktails and beer and wine and spirits every day. Sundowners took on almost religious significance, frequently from beaches or sandspits or sandbars or boats or cliffops or mountainsides with views of gorgeous seascapes. Definitely am slowing down this decade.

I'm a wine glass a night (or 2 depending on the food)

for most of the week, then on Sat. night a bottle over the course of the evening.  Every 2nd Saturday we have wine parties and tastings were strange things can happen:

and up to a bottle and a half to 2 bottles can be consumed individually over the course of several hours.

Sundays - I sleep.

My normal is two glasses a day, usually do not have any on the weekend. I plan my meals based on what type of wine I want, and make sure the next days meal goes with the wine I have opened.

Good idea about planning ahead, I'm usually off the cuff as far as that goes.

I usually drink a bottle every week, one glass every night. Although i try to take some dry weeks every 2 or 3 weeks.

Try to keep it to a bottle a night unless there's company.

One bottle per week consisting of one pour on Friday, Saturday and Sunday and remain dry on weekdays. There are no rules when company arrives or on holiday weekends when multiable bottles are opened.

Wow, most of you are really disciplined! 1 bottle (each) per night is a nice average number. Sometimes it is not enough. Other times if one starts late due to work, etc it is too much.

BLM - you're right. It's a nice average number. It's the baseline. I haven't counted but I suppose my "average" may be higher.

But you figure whites don't really count, bubbles aren't common, at least in this house, and sweet wines are actually dessert, not wine.

Finally, a couple folks with wine habits more in line with mine.  The CFO and I tend to split a bottle every night, starting with a glass with some light apps before we start prepping for dinner.  On occasion that bottle runs out and a 2nd appears.

It really depends on the occasion :-) At home I'll have at least one or two glasses per evening. Friday and Saturdays I would probably consume a bottle. If out with friends for dinner, it's easy to down a bottle maybe more. Cheers all :-)
