What do my fellow Snooth members feel about Gary Vaynerchuk??
Posted by deconut, Apr 5.

Just putting this out there - any thoughts?? Just curious to get my fellow (well respected) Snooth members opinion of his opinions. Looking forward to "hearing" what you all think.

In what way?

Can I watch his videos? I've never been able to actually watch a whole episode.

Do I agree with his tasting notes? Not always but that's to be expected.

Do I believe the hype? No.

Does he offer great deals sometimes? Absolutely

Have I purchased wine from him? Some, not much actually.

The guy has a lot of heart and hustle. I also hear from winemakers that he has a surprisingly good palate.

He's clearly pulled in 100 different directions - it will be interesting to see what comes next, and how he handles all his existing obligations.

He's okay. i found myself after a while thinking he was kind of obnoxious, but i like hearing his descriptions and his reactions to some wines.

I've found that I can occasionally watch him, provided it's in small doses. I have never used his opinions, though, I merely watched for entertainment.

Obnoxious but at the same time charismatic and one of the best marketers on the planet. Loves wine and it's obvious but I can't stand the schtik. I wouldn't buy based on his say so, only because almost EVERY wine he drinks is one of the most AWESOME WINES OF HIS ENTIRE LIFE but that's like some of the more "reputable" critics too, so take it for what it's worth. But he's done a lot for wine and he's a pretty decent guy in general.

...Gary lost me after tasting the "hot" wines and claiming them to not have been affected by dramatic heat- the kind of "cooking" that happens every summer when wine is not properly stored or shipped.

The point Gary was trying to make was that heated wines held every bit the quality of those at room or slightly below. The point he entirely missed was to let that wine cool back down, THEN try it after it had been sitting quietly in a closet or Eurocave, cooked beyond recognition and oozing the purple stuff from its now sticky capsule.

Truth of it is I liked Gary, at least at first, and commend him on his efforts to jump into the new media. Give the guy his due on making that leap, and donning the "personality cap" in a cause that I think we could all agree is a noble one is spreading wine knowledge & experience.

Grape Radio, Wine Spectator's vids... those kinds of things are where I'm spending my web-watchin' time for the wine world. Gary wore me out after about a week, but, again, I give him props for the ambition and the originality... if not the accuracy.

My opinion ... he makes wine accessible to more people but I don't necessarily agree with his reviews. He has personality and can be extreme and that creates interest. If he wasn't over the top, would people watch?

All of you have great impressions of him - I agree with the negative as well as the positive - @ChipDWood - you hit the nail on the head though!! He is not my thing either - the loud, over the top, "this is the best" hype is a turn off, I agree - I also agree with the marketing thing - WOW - don't you all think our banking system could use him right about now!!??
I think Greg - our main Snooth Wine Critic - should do tasteful videos on our beloved Snooth - he is incredibly qualified and has much more class - anyone with me??
