wedding present wine?!!?

Posted by Clementina, Aug 3, 2010.

I am trying to find a great bottle of (preferably) red wine as a wedding gift for my best friend- and would love to get something from 2007 which was the year they got together (cheesy maybe..but I'd like to get some meaning behind the bottle!).  Any suggestions of something interesting... different, possibly Spanish... but essentially special, would be very gratefully received!

Thanks.

how much were you looking to spend? and is this something that you want them to drink now or hold on to and drink later?

2007 was a great year from the Rhone in France. A little bit pricy, because of it, but therefore perhaps even more appropriate for such a gift. Several of them still in the marketplace, too. If you're interested, I can make some recommendations for Chateauneuf du Pape, or Hermitage or others. Again, some budgetary ideas would be good....

How about a personalized bottle of wine with their picture on them?

Suppose it depends on whether you focus on merely form, or true content?! ;-)

Avoid South East Australia - severe Frost ridden vintage

Margaret River was excellent

2007 Cullen Diana Madelaine Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot

Somehow I don't think Greg was pointing at Australia for the wine, Stephen. Rather more for the label. ;-)

To be a little more constructive (though less humorous), here are all the 2007 Rhones K&L are currently carrying. As you can see, a lot to choose from, so give a budget indicator and I'll be happy to help whittle the list down. Some of these wines will knock your socks off.

And Greg, I'll call your Bitch Grenache and raise it a Royal Bitch, plus a Fat Bastard. If you call that, then I'll have to throw in Bitch Bubbly, a couple of Sweet Bitch and Jealous Bitch chards, and then toss in a few Raging Bitch, Bitch Creek and Blond Bitch beers for good measure...

wow - great suggestions, thank you everyone!  Will go through all of them and have a look.  Budget wise I'm looking to spend up to approx £70 (GBP)... $110...I think!

OK, Clementina, you're based in England. That changes the online ordering options a little, and it's unfortunate since US prices are generally lower than those in the UK. Will put on my thinking and research cap and get back to you. I was thinking when looking at the K&L options of multiple bottles, but, again, let me see what's in your neighborhood....

2007 Artadi, Pagos Viejos, Rioja GBP 50

This is available at Berry Bros and Rudd

Is it worth 50 Quid?

I've always found BBR to be pricey.  Kinda like the Sherry Lehman of Britain, though I imagine BBR might take umbrage at the comparison. Plus their selections sometimes make me shake my head in wonder. Too bad K&L doesn't have a presence over there.

50quid for a Rioja is starting to get up there. Is a 2007 anything to drink soon, anyway? Think we need GregT in on this.

That's why I was going to suggest multiple bottles for the Rhone. One for the honeymoon, one for after returning home, another for the 5th or 10th anniversary. Don't really want to be drinking up those higher ranking Chateauneuf du Papes or Hermitages from 2007 just yet.

Champagne is also an obvious option, but the vintage will be problematic.

Clearly most high quality 2007 wines will be a bit early, particularly Reds [Some NZ Pinots are a good drink at 3 years]

Champagne - Correct me if I am wrong but isn't there a minimum no of years for a vintage release? 2007 seems to early, most top houses are at 2002 at the moment [I think]

dmcker - 2007 Rhones would be still a bit tough on the palate?

Also, does Clementina see it for keeping or immediate consumption?

Yes, there are no 2007 champers out now. Would have to go with something like a millenium (2000) vintage. At least it represents the right decade. ;-)

There are some 2007s from the Rhone that are drinkable now, but the good ones will benefit from laying down for a few years, thus the scheme I mention above for multiple bottles.

Am getting a little discouraged wading through the online options I've been able to find for the UK so far. Much higher prices and lesser selection than the US, by far....

I can't believe that when you guys were doing the "Bitch" roster, nobody thought to mention Tait Ball-Buster.  (The feminist side of me is really shaking her head, but I had to put that in there....)  ;-)

Pegau has gained a following, particularly on the Net, but in my estimation it's a middle-of-the-road C9dP that has several betters, especially in the same price range. I like Beaucastel, Vieux Telegraphe, Henri Bonneau, Roger Sabon, Vieux Donjon, Charvin and several others much better.

Still and all, why not try one yourself and see?

Forgot to mention Clos des Papes, though more their older vintages....
