Walla Walla terroir

Original post by penguinoid, Apr 28, 2013.

An interesting article --

I've yet to try any wines from Walla Walla -- simply not available here -- but keep reading about them. It's on my to-do list for if I ever visit the US. But it's particularly interesting to see they're taking terroir more seriously, and planting in more interesting (if harder to cultivate) sites.

Walla Walla has a lot of wonderful varietals as well, and in many cases they've been bottling some of the pure varietals like Cabernet Franc or Petit Verdot.  They've also been doing wonderful things with Sangiovese and Carmenere (see Reininger and Cougar Crest), Barbera and Primitivo (see Forgeron, Cougar Crest and Woodward Canyon).

As for Long Shadows, if you plan to visit, call ahead, as they have limited space and hours available for tastings, so it's best to be prepared rather than disappointed.

Getting back to Long Shadows.  Interesting to see Dunn and Forgeron mentioned on this thread.

Randy Dunn makes the Feather Cabernet Sauvignon for Long Shadows.  And Gilles Nicault, the director of winemaking at Long Shadows, is the husband of Marie-Eve the wine maker at Forgeron!

Good info, Lucha.  BTW, Tour of California is underway (and overlapping with the Giro).  Want a guest post?  I might even upload a picture of me with Mt. Diablo in the background.

Noticed that Dunn made the Feather in '09, has he made it every year?

Either way it's definitely on my short (ish) list to try.

The Feather looked like a more reasonable way to get a Dunn-crafted wine, although it's still not cheap.  I'd be interested in putting down a couple of those bottles, especially as an alternative "birth year" bottle.  That might work out for you, JD.  I'm doubtful I can find the years I would need with clear provenance.

What years were you looking for?

I haven't "Dunn" much checking but I know I can get the '09 locally for about $50
