Virginia Wine: The Governor's Cup Winners 2016

Posted by Really Big Al, Feb 23, 2016.

Hot off the presses, Virginia just announced the winners for the 2016 Virginia Governor's Cup.  At the top of the heap is the 2014 Kenswick Vineyards Cabernet Franc.  I wonder if there will be any bottles left to try....

Cool.  Get one and bring it out here this summer! I'd like to try the Petit Verdot.

I'll be in Oregon the 3rd week of March.  Are you coming down from the great far north?

Well, even though the Hague Winery didn't win any medals this time in the 2016 Governor's Cup, I decided to open a 2013 Meritage that was in my rack.  Not bad but of course a few more years would probably help.

Hahaha, Al I don't think I'll make it to Oregon in March.  There's a bike race in Seattle I'll be going to in May, but that's about as close as it gets.  Why not pop up to Victoria?  Free accommodations!

How come the Octagon didn't make that list?

Some of the Virginia wineries don't submit their wines to the competition - we've asked a few of them like RdV in Delaplane, VA.  It is a significant cost to submit several cases of wine, plus you need enough production to have a minimum number of bottles available for purchase.

Tonight we are serving pasta to Sandra's parents so I am now decanting this lovely 2009 Cabernet Franc from the Barboursville Vineyards down near Charlottesville, VA.  This is the same winery where Octagon comes from.  The 2013 release of this wine just won the silver medal at the 2016 Virginia Governor's Cup competition.

Oh yeah!  This 2009 Cabernet Franc from Barboursville is most excellent after an hour being decanted.  However, Sandra's parents just canceled on coming over for dinner due to a big storm that is in our area.  I'm talking lighting, hail and lots of rain.  Oh, there were some tornadoes south of us too.  I'm staying inside tonight.
