Traveling to Florence and Chianti

Posted by westcoastriesling, Feb 10, 2010.

Hi!
I am new to snooth and I will be traveling to Florence in March for 9 days. My husband and I are planning on taking a day trip to Chianti. I could use some suggestion of some wineries to visit? since there are a lot.

Hi there West Coast. I was in Tuscany late last year and wrote several emails about my visit. Here is a link to the first, there are links to the the other in this first one. Let me know if you have any specific interests and I can add additional suggestions for you!

Thank you! very detailed I believe we are going to focus on chianti/greve, we got priced on a private tour which would have been nice but a little out of our price range? I'm assuming you drove your self every where? and if you did, did you have to make appointments to visit the wineries?

I would strongly recommend making appointments to visit the wineries! If you decide to come as far as Montalcino, give me a shout!

You must make appointments. You are visiting people's business, and sometimes their homes. Courtesies will translate into better visits. And give Laura a Shout!

I was Florence in October and I stumbled on this shop, Fattoria San Michele a Torri, maybe a five minute walk from the Duomo. It's located at: Via di San Michele, 36 - 50018 Scandicci - Firenze. They had two large wine vats from which they were selling some of the best wine I had the entire trip. It's an organic and sustainable operation they have going with their wines, pork, and olive oil. We set a vineyard tour/tasting up in the shop and the next day we visited their vineyard only 15 km away. It is right between Chianti Colli Fiorentini and Chianti Classico appellation areas.
We had other vineyard trips and tastings and such, but this one really stood out. We even went back to the shop a few times in the week for wine for the hotel. Here's their website:
