The World, May 21, 2011 - RIP

Posted by gregt, May 18, 2011.

In case you missed it, the world ends in a few days.

Here's hoping everyone enjoys a nice bottle of something good.  Normally I'd suggest a red but I can see the case for a nice, crisp white.

Cheers all!

(BTW - there's some dispute about the exact time.  A few people think we have another year.  Best not to take any chances though.)

Thanks for the newsflash, Greg. To think, without your assistance I might have entirely missed the memo.

And drats, I wasted one of my last nights on beer tonight, rather than good wine. Maybe, though, I will have some grappa with a slice of mango pie a friend baked. Then to sleep. Though I suppose instead I should start partying straight through for the next three days....

Is it visiting Aliens in Space ships taking us away this time? or a mega-disaster? I need to know so I can pack up some of my favorite Barolos to take with me or should i just start drinking now, non-stop? Inquiring minds want to know!

Desert Island wines?

Desert Island wines, indeed.  Kind of like GdP's thread.  How many do we get?  How long are we stuck on the island?  What kind of food can we scavenge there?  What's the weather?

Or how about desert island deserts?  What island would you choose?

Or dessert island wines:  sweet things from the Canary Islands, Corsica, Sicily, and, I guess, New Zealand.

GregT:  Does this mean we shouldn't make plans for a Snoother meet-up in the fall in NYC?

The wine world almost seems to be getting too big.

If I had to pick regions i'm still in favor of Bordeaux, Pacific Northwest.  Tuscany, Rhone & Rioja would probably round out my top 5.

Don't forget Chile, a short ride from Pacific to Andes with great Carmenere containing blends to ease the trip.

And, as a bonus, we have the fun city of Santiago.

So Foxall, what islands would you choose? That's almost (but not quite) as hard as the choice of wine.

French Polynesia, the Maldives, the Cycades, southern Thailand, Salt Spring, even Sri Lanka--I can easily list two dozen more. Need some parameters....

You guys - we're talking WORLD.  This isn/t about regions, or even countries, it's about the whole planet.

Cripes, talk about globalization!

Is that a bad vintage or what!

We're fantasizing with travelporn--what's wrong with that? It's like being stuck in the Alaskan wilderness, with no survival skills or smarts, starving, and imagining an English breakfast, or platos de Bistec con papas fritas, or a Mexican feast, or good sushi, or whatever.

I'll see you on the otherside, Greg, and we can have wine and tequila and sake and talk about it.

But then I never did believe the guys who initiated that memo....

We're all doomed.  Regardless of whether that guy is right or wrong.

Might as well drink up.

Sigh.  dmcker cannot be matched--I haven't been to as many islands as he has lived on! But if I was going to be stuck there forever, I want an island with a really good library!  Assuming I am alone, of course.  IF the island remains populated, then I want it to have culture--Polynesia is nice, but I think I can only bask in the sun so much, and I'm not quite sure that the occasional hula dance is enough art for me.  (Now if Gauguin was still alive... although I hear he was an unpleasant neighbor.)

And then you need to be able to make wine.  So let me think a little more.

D, I remember you saying something about this, but what Greek island is best for wine?

Not sure it's the best, but certainly good, and you should be able to find something from Santorini. A shockingly beautiful island to visit, BTW.

D: Seems like one of those.  I had better go take a look at them. Oh, wait, there's only two days until the end of the world.

I think I will just go to Kangaroo Island just of the coast in South Australia.

There is half a chance the end of the world could miss us there

Funnily enough watched a rerun of 2012 last night with John Cusack.  The Mayans give us one more year.

Anyway my boys have football tomorrow so I guess I willwatch them and then worry about EOW

I don't know Stephen, we don't know exactly what's going to happen.  If they just turn the whole thing off, which I suspect is what will happen, then whether it's an island or not won't really matter. I mean, there's gotta be a kill switch somewhere - any decently designed machine will have one, so all of the artifacts of the world we know may not exist any more.

Now if we could figure out a way to jam that kill switch . . .

OK, so who is it exactly who's predicting this end? And is there any kind of rationale attached?
