The View from the Tasting Bar

Posted by John Andrews, Apr 3, 2008.

[I'm really excited to welcome our newest guest blogger. John, aka HondaJohn, surfaced on our Talk section as an active member of the community - he had a unique point of view, an engaging writing style and we liked what he had to say. 3 weeks later, in true Web 2.0 style, he's our latest guest blogger, and I'm really looking forward to reading his posts.]

The minds behind Snooth asked me if I would like to blog for Snooth. My first reaction to this invitation is, "Wow, this is cool". Then I thought about it bit longer and, I'll be honest, I became a little overwhelmed. I had looked at the other bloggers currently making to submissions to Snooth and, once again, I felt a little overwhelmed. Snooth has assistant wine makers, wine shop owners and wine school professionals blogging. Who am I compared to them. Then it hit me. I'm the everyday wine lover who has the benefit of seeing how the wine industry works from the inside. Being a part-time employee I still retain my impartial customer perspective but I get to see how things work on the inside. I'm the California wine-insider.

How did this happen? I decided that _for me_ being a consumer was not enough. I needed more. I needed to be in the industry and I needed to learn from people within the industry. I waited to the harvest time and sent my name around to a bunch of Northern California wineries. Some big, some small, some I knew very well and some I just had heard about. I actually got replies from 4 out of the 6 wineries. Having my choice of positions was completely unexpected. This was going to be, as I put it, my fun-time job so I wanted to make sure the place I was going go to had to be fun. This led me to Loxton Cellars. Loxton Cellars is run by Chris Loxton (an Aussie wine maker with 4 generation legacy in the wine industry) and is a true small independent winery. There is no corporate backing, no fancy tasting room and, most of all, no pretentiousness. This was for me. I’ve been at Loxton Cellars for just over a year and half and have loved every minute that I've been there.

I truly believe that I can provide some insight for all the Snoothers out there. I am like a lot of you. I am your every day wine enthusiast (or as my friends call me, 'wine geek'). I’m the every day wine lover who has the privilege of having an insider look to what really goes on. Of course, fellow blogger at Snooth, Dan Petroski (Assistant Winemaker at Larkmead Vineyards) is here to keep me honest.

What can you expect from me? You'll get a straight forward, honest view of the wine industry and wine. You'll hear what I like, dislike and what I just don't get or understand. Nothing fancy, just the way I see it. I call my blog, "The View from the Tasting Bar". I hope you will like what I have to say and I look forward to sharing my thoughts with you. Cheers!

We definitely need the wine-geek/lover perspective, because we make up most of the market! Those on the receiving end of wine production have an important role to play. I'm really glad to have you on board.

HondaJohn, no need to welcome you, you have been here the whole time. You are a wine-geek, extraordinaire amongst enthusiasts. Looking forward to your words on wine.

I love reading this, you are living my dream! I grew up with a father that is a huge "wine geek" as you put it. Every family vacation was to a winery. I always felt I would work in the industry. Maybe when I retire. I am so excited to hear your side of things!
