The new hotness in Sonoma

Posted by Mike Meisner, Jun 27, 2012.

I wanted to share my experience at one of Sonoma's newest, and probably the most architecturally stunning wineries I have been to. Ram's Gate opened last year, and I have been there several times since then. In talking with some other locals, I hear mostly good reviews, although I'm sure there have been some gripes as they get up and running.

If you don't know about Ram's Gate, here's the low down. It's a thirty million dollar structure, erected at the old Roche location, perched atop a hill. No expense has been spared in the construction, and it features a great mix of contemporary design and rustic country feel to it. Lots of space to stretch out and enjoy a tasting; there's a large wine bar, three fireplaces, outdoor seating, and 360 degree views of the surroundings.

Highlights include the food pairings, which were quite tasty. We had a cheese plate, and a bit of lamb, both of which were paired with suggested wines. The wines themselves, though not exceptional, were very good. The Estate Pinot and Late Harvest Chardonnay were my winners, though I still love the Pinots from Nicholson Ranch hands down. I'm not usually into dessert wines, but theirs wasn't syrupy, and had a nice crispness to it.

So, if you get a chance, take a moment to stop in there. It's probably the closest Sonoma winery to San Francisco too.

From the pic, it looks very elegant.

I clicked on the link, but did not have the patience for the load to complete.  ?????

Sorry to say "the old Roche location" is not meaningful to me.  I am curious, though.  Am I correct that the name indicates that it is in or near Carneros?

It's actually right off highway 121, and if you drove past Cline/Jacuzzi it would be towards the end of that road, on the left. Not sure if that's strictly Carneros or not.

It hugs the edge of the AVA. Just barely, where the lower tail of the shaded area follows 121 to 37..\

OK, I know where Cline is.  OT's map was also very helpful.

Thanks OT! If you know where Infineon Raceway is, Ram's Gate is just past there as you leave Sonoma towards the highway.
